Half-Blood Blog Tour: Interview and GIVEAWAY.

Wednesday, July 15, 2015

If you follow this blog... (which you probably are, seeing that you are reading this. If you aren't, join in the fun! Books and writing people, you'll expect lots of that from this blog.)
... Anyways. I got distracted. (Expect randomness, too, in the best of ways, I promise.)
Okay. *cough* If you follow this blog, you probably have heard me rave about the Ilyon Chronicles, a fantasy series that involves lots and lots of epicness.

A mere two days ago, Jaye released a prequel novella on Jace's backstory (the poor, tortured gladiator). I've read it, and let me tell you, it's intense. It's heartbreaking, sad, and at times you don't see how there could be any hope in Jace's life.

But in the end, Jaye does a wonderful job of letting hope reign in his life, and set it up perfectly for Resistance. I do recommend reading Half-Blood after Resistance, however.
Read on for an interview and an EPIC giveaway.

What does a typical writing day look like? Do you have a schedule?

I confess, I’m bad with schedules. I don’t have a set schedule for writing. I do like to write in the morning, though, and try to get to it shortly after breakfast. It always depends on what else I have on my to-do list. Writing is only a fraction of what I need to do. I’m almost always in the middle of editing, and I also have my jewelry shop to keep running, which takes much more time than I ever expected. So my days are pretty full.

If you could transport yourself to ANY fictional world, where would you go? Anything specific you'd like to do in that world?

Can I pick Ilyon? :D Because I’d love to visit and crete city and go dragon riding with Talas. I’d also love to go horseback riding through Landale with Jace and Kyrin. If not Ilyon, then I’d probably pick . . . Middle-earth if I got to hang out with Aragorn in Rivendell. :)

Favorite food?
Cheese. :)

Favorite Movie?
Lord of the Rings!

Favorite Song?
Oh . . . that’s super tough. How about favorite song from each of my favorite artists (though that’s just as tough)? :D

The gasps and murmuring grew. Though some were hardly more than whispers, clear words reached Jace’s ears—dangerous, monster, animal, soulless. He tried to back away from their accusing eyes, but the collar pulled hard against his throat and held him in place.

For all his years as a slave, Jace has known nothing but the hatred people hold for his mixed blood—one half human, the other half the blood of a race considered monsters. Always, he is the outsider and quickly learns it is better to keep to himself. But, when his volatile ryrik blood leads him to do the unthinkable, he is thrown into a world of violence and bloodshed.

Forced to become a gladiator, Jace finds more and more of his heart dying as his master works to break down his will not to become the monster everyone believes he is. When a stranger interferes with his master’s harsh punishment, Jace’s world is upended yet again. But with it comes the possibility of hope that has long since died. Could the man possibly hold the key to escaping the hopeless darkness that is Jace’s life? Is there such a thing as life beyond the cruelty of slavery?

See where Jace’s story all began . . .

Cover Reveal - Implant

Thursday, July 2, 2015
Happy Thursday and second day of Camp! I hope you all are doing fantastical on your goals. If not, you still have most of the month left! I'm cheering you on. :D

Today I have a cover reveal for one of my favorite authors, J. Grace Pennington. She writes epic Christian fiction from westerns to sci-fi. I wrote a review for the first book in her Firmament Series, Radialloy, here.

We'll get right to it -- here's the cover!

Welcome to the world of a universal cure.

Gordon Hardling didn't ask for the life he has. He didn't ask to be orphaned. He didn't ask to go through life with cancer. And he certainly didn't ask to be pulled into a future world without warning--a world where every human being is controlled by means of a medical implant.

And when he learns that he's the only one who can destroy the base of operations, he's faced with an impossibly painful choice: either hide and let the world decay under this mysterious futuristic force, or rescue humanity from oppression, knowing that there's someone out there who is willing to use any means necessary to stop him.

- - -

Grace has posted a couple short snippets from Implant on her blog, so I thought I'd share them to keep things interesting. :)
- - -

“You were on the Head’s side. What made you change your mind?”Doc’s lips turned up ever so slightly. “You should be able to guess. I forgot what it was to have principles or convictions until that idealistic dreamer came along. After I was sent to the base as a spy, he reminded me–in no uncertain terms, either. You’ve seen how pushy he is.”Gordon couldn’t help a smile.
- - -
Gordon pedaled as fast as he could, intensely focused on taking deep breaths. Each inhalation set off a dull pain deep in his chest, but he persisted, stubbornly ignoring his rapidly increasing heart rate. Baum would fuss that he was exerting himself too much, but Gordon didn’t care. He had to get into shape somehow, and riding his bike to work was the best way he could think to do it . . .
- - -
"There are only ten safe tunnels," Doc puffed, walking with his big fists clenched. "Don't know if everyone will fit or not, but we'll have to do the best we can. There's--you've got to--what the..."
Unable to account for Doc's sudden spluttering loss for words, Gordon looked straight ahead. A chill swept through him, settling in his stomach, making his spine turn to ice. A scream rose in his throat but didn't escape; he stopped, stumbled, forced himself to remain upright. No. No, no, no, no!

How I Discovered Ilyon

How I Discovered Ilyon
A Documented Adventure by Katie Grace

Before I start this story, to those who many not know, Ilyon is the fantasy world that appears in The Ilyon Chronicles (hence the name) by Jaye L. Knight. If you have not read them, they follow a tortured gladiator and a girl who can remember anything, both living in a land where believers of Elom are persecuted because of their faith.

My grandma first introduced the tales to me by borrowing Jaye's first two books by her previously published pen name, Molly Evangeline.

I gobbled up half of the first book during Church (I was younger. I promise.) and finished it later that afternoon. Wanting more of Jaye's writing, I read her Makilien Trilogy. That's how I discovered fantasy and my own love for weaving together stories of epic adventures.
Finally, after a long awaited couple of years, Jaye came out with Resistance.

(Just stop and let your eyes rest on the gorgeousness of this cover for a few moments. Done? Okay. I'll move on.)

I read it in one night. And then immediately started it again the next day. There are few words to describe out awesome it was. At last I was immersed in another wonderful fantasy world of Jaye's.

That's how I discovered the books of Ilyon.
But the country itself? That's a different story.

- - -

     It started with a journal.

It was an old, leather bound journal. It's pages were worn and yellowed, and was wrapped tightly with thick pieces of leather. On the top lay a simple key, the once shining bronze coating now rusted and chipped.
It was this journal that appeared in my nightstand drawer. It was night when I found it. My family was asleep, and I should have been, too. But my mind was wandering and I felt the need to journal.
But the journal I pulled out was not my blue journal. It felt... leathery. I wrinkled my nose as I turned on my lamp.

Shakespeare Leather Journal with Key in Vintage by MedievalJourney

No, definitely not my journal. But then... what was it? And how did it get here?
I unwrapped the tie and tried to open it.
     The book wouldn't budge.
     What...?
I overlooked an important detail (Sleep deprivation tends to do that to you): There was a lock on the journal.
Key... Lock... My mind connected the two objects rather quickly despite my sleepless state. I grabbed the key and jabbed it into the lock, successfully opening it after only a couple tries.
Carefully, I opened the book to the middle, and shivered. I glanced around the room. It wasn't cold in here. Or, at least it hadn't been just moments before. I wrapped my arms around myself and turned back to the book.
     I blinked.
My nightstand was gone and replaced by a stump.
The grey carpet beneath my feet now crackled with dried up leaves.
The confined walls of my room were now endless, and instead trees dotted the landscape.
I heard voices instead of the quiet music from my radio. My eyes widened.
     Voices--!

Very much like the road through the forest. www.ilyonchronicles.com

With all the adventure novels I have read in my life, I knew immediately that hearing voices when suddenly transported to a foreign land meant one of two things:

     1. Their intentions were good. We were about to become lifelong friends and set off on an epic quest to save the world together.
     Or...
     2. Their intentions were bad. It is very likely that they are about to kill you.

My mind immediately assumed the latter option. Holding my breath, (unintentionally) I shot away from the voices, only to find myself on the ground a few seconds later after tripping on my to-long pajama pants. I rolled over and slowly sat up.
     Two faces were above me.
My breath continued to hold as I stared at both of them. One looked a few years older than me, a lady, with short brown hair. There was a man standing next to her. His eyes stuck mine, clear and blue. The small, pointing tips of ears protruded from his black hair. A wolf padded up behind them.
I released my breath, blinking quickly. That wasn't... Tyra, was it?
"Jace," the young woman said softly, her eyes darting over to his.
If I were the screaming type, this would have been the perfect time to let out a startled scream. My favorite fictional characters were standing right above me.
But, instead, (as far as I know. It was hard to keep a clear train of thought in that moment) I looked up at the girl and said, "Kyrin?"
She took a step back, eyes wide. Jace moved in front of her.
I got to my feet (despite my dizziness from the surprising turn of events) and brushed off most of the dirt and leaves from my pajamas (they were, in fact, purple, which looked rather out of place in the forest) "I'm Katie," I said and smiled shakily, trying not to let my reader craziness show through.
Kyrin stepped out to the side from behind Jace. She smiled back, but warily, eyeing me closely. "I'm Kyrin," she nodded slowly.
Both she and Jace shared a look.
"Come with us." Jace jerked his head back further into the forest.
They led me back to their camp. I'm afraid, in fear of spoiling the series and letting unauthorized information slip through, that's all I can report. I may or may not be back in my home. Otherwise, I'm typing in Lenae's cabin, somehow able to find a faint Wi-Fi signal to share all this with you.
     That's how I discovered Ilyon.
And don't worry -- I gave Jace countless amounts of cookies for all of you.

The Wildcat of Braeton Blog Tour - Interview and Giveaway!

Saturday, March 28, 2015
Today I welcome the wonderful Claire to you, celebrating her upcoming release, the Wildcat of Braeton. It looks like an epic novel that I really hope to read someday.
Before the author interview, here's about the book:

- - - - - - - - - - -

“If you’re fighting our battle, we’d best make you look
like a champion,” Tam said to Aiden. Tam and Blair began to apply the war paint the Clans had worn into battle since before they arrived in Braeton.

“You ready?” Tam asked when they finished.

“As I’ll ever be,” Aiden replied. “Tam, if everything goes wrong, you take charge after me.”

“I’m praying nothing goes wrong,” Tam said. “Just remember what Diarmad said when he built this place: ‘In times of trouble, a Champion shall rise up and Scodra shall not fall.’”

His term of service to Lord Rishdah now complete, Aiden returns to his home in Braeton. As he travels he hears rumors that trouble plagues Braeton. Clan Canich is being attacked from within. He arrives, determined to save his father, his brothers, and his Clan from the treachery of one man.

A year has passed since the Calorins were driven from Aredor and Corin is struggling to rebuild his country. Despite the peace, a fear haunts him that the Calorins aren’t far away. The Hawk Flight takes to the forest again to defend the borders against a possible attack from the neighboring country of Durna and its Calorin ally.

As Aiden and Corin struggle to adapt to their new lives they know one thing for certain - war is coming to the North!

Why did you choose to start writing?

I decided to start writing because I wanted to create my own adventure story. And I was tired of having the same story in my head for four years!!

Quick! Name one random fact about yourself.

I have a growing collection of cowboy boot ornaments and figurines. Mostly ornaments though.

What inspired this series?

I love the Narnia stories and I think they inspired me more than even LOTR did. I started making up stories in Narnia because that way I could actually go there. Then eventually I decided to take one and make it my own. From there it developed into an adventure story with elements I loved from other books and movies.

What does your writing process look like?

Typically I start writing a story in a notebook. I love the way a pen feels against the paper and I think it’s easier to write that way. After I finish the story I take the notebook or notebooks and sit down at the computer and begin typing it up. That’s where a lot of editing and rewrites come in. After that I kind of edit in bursts when the mood takes me. More and more recently I've been writing on the computer instead of notebooks because a computer is most readily accessible. However, I do like having notebooks lying around to jot down ideas and stuff. Which reminds me…I need a few more notebooks… :)

You can never have enough notebooks. xD
How do you incorporate your faith into your books?

I think a book can reflect Christianity without saying its name outright or through allegory on every page. To be a true Christian it takes more than saying you believe in God. It’s how you act. And that’s really what I incorporate into my books. My characters always have strong morals that they aren’t willing to compromise when the going gets rough. They show respect to friends and enemies, love their country, and will do what it takes to defend it. I also find it important to include an overall deity figure even if I don’t ever go into the belief structure because I think that there needs to be a higher power than governs the world and that people can believe in.

What's the hardest part about writing?

I think the hardest part is staying true to the story you want to tell even if you think it won’t be popular among your audience because there is a reason you picked that story to tell. That and editing. I don’t like editing.

I don't like editing either. Welcome to the club!
What is something you love to do besides writing?

Horseback riding! I've been riding horses since I was twelve. I love horses so much! I haven’t actually ridden in about a year and a half and it’s kind of killing me inside! We joke that a horse is the first thing I’m going to buy when I get a real job after graduation.

What are some of your favorite books/authors?

Shadow Hawk by Andre Norton, The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis, Resistance by Jaye L. Knight, Triss by Brian Jacques, I can’t just pick one of the LOTR series, and more recently discovered are Behold the Dawn by K.M. Weiland and Cinderella and the Colonel by K.M. Shea.

Who is your favorite character in this book and why?

I do like Aiden who is the main character in The Wildcat of Braeton, but I think my favorite will always be Corin since he’s the first real character I created. I have loved seeing him grow and develop in The Rise of Aredor to accepting who he truly is in The Wildcat of Braeton.

Claire Banschbach was born and raised in Midland, TX, the fourth of eight children. She was homeschooled through high school and is now a proud member of the Texas A&M University class of 2014. An avid reader of Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and many other adventure novels, Claire was prompted to begin writing her own fantasy novel at seventeen after several years of daydreaming. She continues to write in her spare time (and often when she doesn't have spare time). When not scratching out stories and homework with pen and pencil, Claire partakes in the joys of watching the Boston Red Sox, Aggie football, playing volleyball, and horseback riding. She hopes her faith and strong foundation in God will continue to help guide her writing. She is currently working on her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center.

Opens at midnight March 23 and closes at midnight on March 28. Giveaway includes 2 signed copies of The Wildcat of Braeton and accompanying sets of four notecard sized illustrations from the series!

The King's Scrolls Blog Tour - Character Interview and Giveaway!

Tuesday, February 24, 2015

Today on A Writer's Faith we have a special character interview and an awesome giveaway.
But first, about the epic story.
- - - - - - - - -

Picture
Following the harrowing events that brought them to Landale Forest, Jace and Kyrin have settled comfortably into their new lives and the mission of protecting those under the emperor’s persecution. The fast approach of winter brings with it the anticipation of a quiet few months ahead. That is until the arrival of four mysterious, dragon-riding cretes who seek aid in a mission of great importance—not only to their own people, but to all followers of Elôm.

Hidden in the vast mining valley north of Valcré, a faithful crete has spent years sharing his knowledge with the destitute miners and their families and is known to possess what may be Arcacia’s last surviving copies of the King’s Scrolls—the Word of Elôm.

Joining the cretes, those in Landale must find the crete teacher and bring him to safety, but it is a race against time. Should Daican’s men find him first, execution and the destruction of the Scrolls is certain.

When disaster strikes, all seems lost. Could Elôm have a plan even in the enemy’s triumph?
- - - - - - - - - - -

(And I had the honor of interviewing one of the characters from The King's Scrolls: Leetra. My questions are in black, and Leetra's are in blue.))

Hi, Leetra! I am so delighted to meet you, and I can only hope that the feeling is mutual. *glances at Leetra's face for any reaction*

*she sits stoically*

Ah.. * fumble through my notecards, a bit nervous* Your author gave me permission to ask you a few questions. Is that okay with you?

I suppose. It's not like we characters are given much choice in such matters. But she did warn me to be polite since most people are not accustomed to the cretes' way of stating things bluntly, so I will do my best.

*I smile half-heartedly* Thanks. First question: Upon first meeting people, what would you like them to know about you?

Apparently, I've gained a somewhat... unflattering reputation for being rude and prickly. I don't apologize for who I am since it's very common amount my people, though we don't see it as rude. I'm just not very open to strangers and those I am not comfortable with. I guess I would like them to know that I'm not as... cold as I might appear. At least not all the time. I do have feelings, I just tend to keep them well guarded.

*I try to flash her an encouraging smile* Then I thank you for being so open with me. How are cretes different from other races in Ilyon? And what do you like about being a crete?

Our culture I very different---more... rustic. We're closer to nature than most races, except for ryriks possibly. We are very proud of who we are and don't like much outside influence. We can seem unfriendly or suspicious to outsiders. I like that among my people women aren't discouraged from some of the more masculine pursuits like they are in Arcacia, for instance. It is perfectly acceptable for a crete woman to learn how to use weapons and ride dragons in combat if the occasion calls for it.

*my face lights up, especially at the dragon part* I have to say, I'm a jealous of your dragons, but I'd be a bit uneasy with riding one, though I'd probably go for it anyways. Was there ever a time when you were scared of riding a dragon?

No. Cretes aren't scared of dragons. It's something we're introduced to as infants. By the time we even understand what flying is, we've already been doing it with our parents many times. It's really not any different from walking.

*my eyebrows raise* Impressive. From different assorted sources, I'm aware that you know a man by the name of Falcor and are rather close to him. He's a crete, right? How did you two come to meet each other?

Yes, he is a crete and he is my fiancé. Our families have been friends since before I was born, so I knew him growing up. We were always fond of each other and make a good match, so when he asked me to marry him, it was an easy decision to accept.

That's such a lovely relationship you have. It's nice that you grew up together so you can really know and trust one another. What can you tell us about your family?

I am the oldest and have six younger siblings, the youngest being four years old. Family is very important to the cretes, so I'm very close to them. It's a pretty hectic and loud environment sometimes, but that is also something cretes are used to and like. Most crete children are very rambunctious and adventurous. I'm also very close to my cousin Talas. He's kind of like the older brother I don't have.

*I nod and offer a smile* What does a typical day look like for you?

I serve under Captain Darq, which usually involves going on patrols or searching the mountains for dragons. Though we usually get enough eggs from the dragons in our possession, sometimes it is good to bring in some new ones from wild dragons. Gathering wild eggs is a dangerous undertaking, and we never take more than one egg from a nest, but it's been part of our lifestyle from the beginning. If I'm not need for patrols, I usually work with one the physicians in my city.

Ooh, that sounds exciting. When you're not working, what do you like to do?

Painting. Not picture painting like most people would think, but painting designs such as the ones we use for our tattoos. It's a good way to relax if it's been a stressful day.

*I raise my eyebrows* I, as well, love to create small designs, though they probably differ much from yours. If we meet again someday, you'll have to show me some of your artwork. If you could get away for a day and do whatever you want, what would you do?

I don't have a lot of time for it, but sometimes I like to go up to the mountains and climb. Cretes enjoy climbing almost as much as flying. As I said, my house gets kind of loud, so it's nice to go out on my own and just enjoy the mountains and think.

Climbing, too? *I grin* Sounds like you have many things to fill your days with. What do you remember best about your childhood?

I had a habit  of following Talas and his brothers around and joining them in their adventures. Those days are some of my fondest memories. And it was Talas who taught me the most about flying. He worked with me a lot on my different skills growing up. Besides playing with my siblings, those are the times I remember best.

*I nod* If you could change anything about your life, what would you change?

I'm perfectly happy with my life. I don't think I'd change anything. But, since you asked and my author would want me to be more conversational, I might change how I interact with outsiders. Talas is very friendly and gets along well with everyone. While I don't envy him, I suppose it would be nice to be a bit more that way.

That's understandable. I have one more question for you. What do you think about Emperor Daican?

He represents everything that is the reason my people left Arcacia. He's an arrogant tyrant who won't listen to reason.

*I smirk* And that, Leetra, is a perfect way to describe that man. Thank you so much for chatting with me. I appreciate your willingness!
