AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS // 2017

Saturday, September 2, 2017
It's the end of summer, and I'm completely okay with that. Because fall means writing with sweaters, chai, soft instrumentals, scented candles, and fuzzy socks. I mean... what can get better than that? (beside ordering a pizza)

Before we completely move on to fall, here's a look back at August and the last of the summer days.

Every month in my bullet journal I have a column for special memories, and it's quite amusing how many of them are food related: homemade quesadillas! coldstone ice cream! pizzzaaaa! donuts! constant coffee drinking! So there's my quick food overview for August. :P

I attended TWO weddings this month, which is kind of insane considering the fact that I haven't been to a wedding in about ten years. Both weddings served extremely delicious cupcakes (like a Snickers one! o.o), so that was a win!

This made me laugh until I cried:
Still working a bunch at Starbucks. Now that college has started there have been a lot more students in our lobby, and I've also begun to hang around writing before and after my shifts. It's just a pleasant atmosphere, yeah? There's something about a coffeeshop that increases productivity by ten thousand percent. (it's not a proven fact but it might as well should be)

The lovely Gabriela and I are watching Stranger Things together (very slowly, since life is a thing for both of us), and my sister and I have been (also slowly) enjoying Pysch. I don't think I could ever be a binge-watcher, no matter how appealing that sounds. There are so many other things to do! Unless I'm sick. Then I'll binge-watch away.

My sister and I also discovered the hilarity that is Studio C. Their YouTube videos are absolute GOLD (and clean!). But goodness, there are so many of them. Any favorite sketches I should definitely watch?

Music finds of the month:

Alcatraz // Oliver Riot -- catchy tune! it's one of those where you can't help but tap your foot along to the beat. I feel like this could be a soundtrack for a character?

Haze // Amber Run -- it's a sad song, but sometimes the soul needs to listen to an achingly beautiful sad song. the vocals are amazing, the lyrics are amazing, and it might be one of my new favorites so GO LISTEN TO IT. (I first found this song at night when it was raining and it fits so well <3)

I've come to the conclusion that it's finally time to lower my Goodreads goal. I reduced it from 100 to 60. *winces* And even with the new goal, I'm STILL behind. Pathetic, I know. BUT SOMEHOW I SHALL PREVAIL.

I read three published books this month. I also went through Alea's novella, but... unfortunately that doesn't count toward my Goodreads goal. -.-

Strange the Dreamer [2/5] - it started off amazing, and I thought for sure it was going to be a five star book! but then the plot dragged on and not a lot happened and I got bored, so it quickly became a two star book. :P

1984 [4/5] - dude, this is an example of a very intense dystopian society. o.o also, it was one of the first classics that I actually enjoyed!

Saint Anything [4/5] - cute fluffy book that is about family and friends and there is LOTS of pizza so obviously I loved it.

AND LOOK! Moving onto bookish news... one of my favorite authors and friend, Nadine Brandes, has signed a book contract with Thomas Nelson! You can proceed to run over to her blog and read all the little story tidbits she spilled. :D

I've falling in love with handwriting, which isn't good news for NaNoWriMo...
WHY IS WRITING SO HARD? *sobs* Hannah and I were talking about making progress on writing and editing, and I told her that "I feel like a snail." Seriously. Getting anything accomplished is taking 10000x longer than it normally does. Last week it took me thirty minutes to rewrite 300 words. I was focused the whole time, too. Just??? Why?? Usually it takes me under ten minutes??

I'm hoping that I can speed up the pace in September. Obviously I want to make sure that the content I'm producing is quality... but at this rate I'm not sure if I'm ever going to finish this draft, and that would be quite unfortunate. Feel free to yell at me to go and edit anytime. :P

September will be my final push before the NaNoWriMo prep starts! All I have for NaNo is this vague superhero idea... and it isn't much to go off of. It better work out, because I don't have a plan B. :P

OH! The first draft copies I ordered of my books finally arrived! I plan to share some pictures and maybe a snippet of a vlog later in September (if I can get my act together and actually take pictures and record a video :P). But they're very gorgeous and it's hard not to keep staring at them.

Lisa decided to be the sweetest person on this planet and wrote an entire blog anniversary celebration post for me! I read it, squealed, and proceeded to lay face first on the ground because I didn't know how to handle the excitement. :P

Erin, one of my favorite bloggers, just redid her blog design and it is GORGEOUS. She's just an all around talented and lovely person, so do check out her site

I'm so tempted to link to every post Rosalie writes because they're all so awesome, but instead here is her latest one that really connected with me. It's about passion gone wrongWhen Something I Love Became Something It Shouldn't.

-

I hope your August was amazing, and if it wasn't... I hope that September goes better for you. May the words and inspiration (and motivation, ha) come easily! Let's go conquer this month and our goals together.

<3,
katie grace

what do you hope to accomplish in September?
have you discovered any new music this month?

  1. Haha, first comment! *throws pizza colored glitter because I CAN AND NO ONE CAN STOP ME*

STUDIO C IS AMAZING. My favorites are the Harry Potter ones, Prop Switch, the one where they play Mafia, and the Would You Rather one. They're hilarious. (Especially the Mafia one because we homeschoolers play that game allllll the time, lol.)

Ugh, my WIP has been so badly neglected this month...I basically just gave up. But I'm insane enough to attempt 30k for my first official NaNo??? I have no idea how it's going to go, but I'm going to try a Beauty and The Beast retelling, so wish me luck!!

I tried listening to Owl City and...I couldn't get into it. So that was kind of a bust for me. But I have really been enjoying Ashes Remain and of course...TWENTY ONE PILOTS. They have become mah jam, I love them.

*nodnod* I've seen the Would You Rather one and a couple of the Harry Potters. I'll have to watch Prop Switch and Mafia! There are so many I need to go through. o.o

AHH YOU CAN DO THIS. Are you going to do this in November, I'm assuming? Eee if you do that's the perfect time since lots of others will be doing the same thing with you. xD

Yeah, I kind of agree with you, actually. I like their song "Fireflies," and their lyrics are good... but I just can't get into their music? *sigh* YAY TWENTY ONE PILOTS. Ugh they're so goood.

Yes, go watch alll the things!!

THANK YOU I NEED ALLLL THE ENCOURAGEMENT. Yes, I'm going to attempt it in November, so you'll probably find me complaining and screaming about it a lot if you post about NaNo.

Yay, someone else you can't get into Owl City! YES TWENTY ONE PILOTS THEY'RE THE BEST.

  2. EEEP So many fun stuffs in this post. I just love hearing about your months. :D

Oooh studio c. I love them. XD Not that I get time to watch them much BUT STILL. I love the Captain Literally ones and...Poker Face? Something like that anyways, and ack they're just all funny. For some reason I can't think of any other specific favourites right now though. XP I can actually mimic Matt Meese's voice, which everyone finds extremely amusing.

Eck, my writing sounds like it's been like yours. I meant to get a novel replotted out and rewritten but I haven't even finished plotting??? I don't know what's wrong with me. >.< Well, to be honest, I do sort of know. I've just been really busy critiquing for friends and also working on the other exciting thing that happened this month...
I MADE A WEBSITE?? *screams and flails* janemareeauthor.com.au *bounces up and down* I've been spending ages working on it and it /just/ got launched and I'm still freaking out. *hides under the table*

OOH YOU CAN MIMIC HIS VOICE?? Just another reason we need to meet, now. That's epic. xD

Well, critiquing is still fun and I'm sure it's much appreciated by everyone you critique for. ^.^ But it's frustrating that you haven't gotten much writing done. :/ Let's hope September goes better writing-wise!!

AHHH. JANE. I JUST CHECKED IT OUT. IT'S AMAZING. I MUST GO OVER TO YOUR BLOG AND FLAIL ABOUT IT NOW.

  3. I totally agree about the coffee shops increasing productivity. I think maybe it's the new environment, just like I seem to be more productive when I'm writing up in the mountains on my family's vacation? Also, there's an element of, "Well, I'm making the effort to be here, so I need to make the most of it," at least for me. So that probably helps.

Do not be ashamed of lowering your Goodreads goal. Some people read slower than others and some people also have less time to read than others.

Finally: where do you get your chai? Do you know where to get decaf chai without spending a fortune? Because all I can find is caffeinated chai, and that means I can't drink it in the evenings if I actually want to get to sleep. :(

    1. I think so, too. And I don't have all the things at home to distract me with. I don't know -- it's strange. But I like it. xD

Well... I usually just drink chai at Starbucks (because it's free...). But I also have a chai tea latte powder of sorts that you can just find at a grocery store. Or on Amazon -- four good sized boxes for a little over ten dollars: https://www.amazon.com/Maxwell-International-Flavored-Instant-Canister/dp/B004T3QNSW/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1504470335&sr=8-1&keywords=maxwell+house+chai

But also that link above is caffeinated chai. I don't think I've ever seen decaffeinated chai?

P.S. I am writing a book about a girl who works in Starbuck's (though obviously that's not the main point of the story) and even though I've done some research I would love to talk straight to a barista. So I might shoot you a message once I get a spare minute ;)

And, aw, I was hoping Strange The Dreamer would get a better rating! I was planning on reading it (at some point xD), but I hate books with slow-moving plots, so ;P.

Also I can totally relate to feeling like a smol snail when writing this month. I can literally sit and stare at my story-notebook for five whole minutes and not write a THING. The words just will not COME xD. I hope you're able to get more words in this month! (ALSO NO HANDWRITING FOR NANOWRIMO. DO NOT GET ADDICTED, KATIE. THAT'S AN ORDER)

  9. OH MY GOSH I'M SO EXCITED THAT IT'S SEPTEMBER. Basically I go through the entire year waiting for fall and then when it's over I'm like "Well... it won't be too long until fall comes again". xD

I can't believe Nano is two months away. o.o I actually have two or three different ideas I could do... and since it takes me a long time to plan, I should really start now. That's crazy, that it's close enough to start planning.

I'm going to have to drop my Goodreads goal too, if I don't want it to look absolutely pathetic at the end of the year. xD I haven't looked at it for a while, but the last time I looked I think I was thirty-ish books behind. Yeah... not great. But I'm still reading, so oh well. xD

EEP. Yes, start planning now so you don't regret it later. Are they all the same genre?

Well, you're not the only one. :P What was your original goal?

      Delete
    2. Oh gosh, yes. That would make me so happy. xD

One of them is kind of fantasy... the other will probably be, too? But I haven't given it a lot of thought. Therefore I should probably get started on that. xD

My original goal was 110 books... I've read 36. o.o It was either really ambitious or really stupid to set my goal that high when I didn't even reach my goal of 100 last year (though I was only one book away). :P

    3. *five books away, actually. Whoops. xD

    4. Bah, planning is overrated. (not really, but I wish it was XD)

DUDE, that's a lot of books! And I don't know why this year is so hard for reading?? Because last year I read 115 (or maybe 120? can't remember) books easily, but now it'll be a stretch to reach 60. Ugh, you're not the only one. :P

Also, I discovered Studio C a couple years back and watched every single video in about two weeks (I'm very prone to binge watching). Stranger Things is such a great show; do you have any theories so far?
Im behind on my reading goals too, so along with getting a job catching up on that is a thing I hope to accomplish this month. I'm reading some coolstuff, though. I found this book from 1985 called 'From Russia to USSR' that's about the lead up to and events of the Russian Revolution. It's pretty neat. Anyway, glad you had an overall nice month! And honestly once I get a laptop I want to head to Barnes & Nobles and write in the Starbucks there. THE VIBES.

(also i finally commented on your last post sorry i was so late lol I WAS NOT VERY HAPPY WITH MYSELF)

  33. AGH! FALL IS MY FAVORITE (Next to winter because it's even colder)! ;D I'm so pumped for cool weather and being able to layer on cardigans and sweaters and socks and then a big ole blanket!! XD
This post was great! And Studio C???? YESSS!! I binge watched their stuff for over a week (I literally had no life) and now I can proudly say I've seen every sketch they've posted. Most of the best ones are the ones that have gotten the most popular in my opinion, so if you filter them from most popular to least popular- watch the videos with the highest views! ;D
My goals for September...hm... I wanna post more, write more, and start to delve deeper into my NaNo plot since I'm kind of lowkey stressed about it. O.o
Awesome post, Katie! Like always! I hope your September goes well! :D
