JULY HIGHLIGHTS // 2017

Saturday, July 29, 2017
July was a good month, but I'm excited for August to come.

I know I comment on the busyness of life every month... but I honestly think July was my busiest month yet. *collapses* I think I feel this way after every NaNo month -- exhausted and accomplished... but really just ready for a break after all the late nights of writing after work and school and life. :P

Let me say this: I really love movies. I know I'm a bookworm and I feel a little traitorous by typing that... but movies hold a special place in my heart. July's movies can be summed up by one character: Spider-Man. I watched the original Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, and the newest one twice! Bet you can't guess who my favorite superhero is. :P

I also saw the movie Dunkirk! It's not my usual genre -- I don't think I've really ever watched a war movie, but the trailer looked awesome, the music sounded awesome, and Christopher Nolan directed it, so I knew it would be awesome. It was such a different movie, which is why I loved it so much. It's like it was made of a series of moments, not focusing on the big picture, but the memories and images that stand out. It's hard to explain so you'll just have to go and see it for yourself. But, man. I want to write books like Christopher Nolan directs movies. <3

Switching to talking about blogging... One night, when I was supposed to be editing, I became inspired and did some coding for a new sidebar widget. If you're reading this post in your browser on a desktop, you can hover over the images under the "read more" section and it should direct you to new posts. (The HTML coding might've broken my brain but I'm glad I finally figured it out :P)

This happened this month:

So. Reading this month. *laughs nervously* ...I read three books. (and bought four. heh. (pictured above) No, not the greatest. Not the worst, but I'm okay with it. I'm debating whether I should change my Goodreads goal from 100 to... something lower. But that feels like cheating, and I don't know what to change it to, and part of me hopes to still reach 100 even though there's like a .0001% chance of that still happening. (one can dream :P)

Even if it wasn't a good month for reading lots of books... LOOK AT HOW GORGEOUS ALL THOSE COVERS ARE (!!!). That automatically makes everything a bit better. xD

The Night Circus [3/5]
The Scorpio Races [5/5]
Kingdom of Ash and Briars [1/5]

Along the lines of good and bookish things... I finally converted my sister into the bookworm world. She's cruising through the Lunar Chronicles faster than any of the books I read this month, and this is HUGE, considering she read a total of like three books last year. So I'm a happy and proud older sister. :')

[editing on Independence Day with appropriately themed pen colors :P]
So many writing things have gone done this month. I started off July strong with finishing my novel, WTaRR. I'm not happy with the ending (or most of the book, if we're being honest), but I'm just glad to be done with it. This novel has become my new "problem child," and I'm content to let it rest on the shelf for a good couple years months before tackling edits.

Meanwhile, I'm slowly cranking along with my Camp NaNo goal (90 minutes a day). I'm behind (no surprise) BUT I'M DETERMINED TO STILL MAKE IT! I'm editing the second draft of Where Shadows Lie. I spent the first week of Camp re-outlining the entire plot, which was exhausting, but SO. WORTH. IT. I finally solved a plot hole hole that's been bothering me since I've plotted this novel, and I couldn't be more relieved. (it's the best feeling ever <3)

Also... *whisper*
(I feel like my month could be summarized as "a superhero-y kind of month" :P)

By the way, I'm insanely jealous of all you lucky people who went to Realm Makers this year. I didn't think I would get very envious, but the pictures and workshop tidbits are being posted and I want a teleportation device now more than ever.

*whisper* August is going to be my three year blogging anniversary. o.o And I have nothing planned. Any ideas or posts you want to see? Otherwise I might do things a little more laid-back this year. It'll be a surprise for everyone involved. :P

Jeneca and I had a lovely conversation about conflicting feedback from critiquers and beta readers, so I might wrap up some of the points we discussed in a post ('tis a tricky matter).

I look forward to chatting with all of you in August! Enjoy the last month of summer. *sniff* (but that means fall is next, which is my favorite season, so I can't be too sad. ;)

<3,
katie grace

did you buy any books this month?
watch any good movies?

  1. I watched Dunkirk too! Chris Nolan is insanely talented, and I loved every second of Dunkirk! I'm actually going to go and watch it again next week! :)

  2. I FINALLY SAW SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING AND IT WAS AMAZING. THAT PLOT TWIST *clutches heart* LIKE OMG IT WAS SO GREAT MY LITTLE WRITER HEART JUST ABOUT BURST WITH HAPPINESS.

    *chills out*

I'm really happy with my reading progress this year, as I believe I mentioned in a previous comment on one of your other posts somewhere on the blog. I read two books this month.

    •Allegiant by Veronica Roth
•If I Run by Terri Blackstock

I actually didn't really care much for Allegiant, although I still got a little emotional during the epilogue. But If I Run was truly a masterpiece that deserves like, the Oscar for books because it was so well written and it flowed soooo well. I'm actually reading the sequel, If I'm Found, and then I shall be highly anticipating the third and final book of the trilogy, If I Live, which gets released in March 2018.

I also really want to get Andora's Folly by the wonderful and amazing Abigayle Claire. I just need to reset my kindle, buy it, and I should be good to go.

Wow, that was a really long comment. I guess I'm a fan of monster, novel comments, lol.

Oh!! And good job with the editing. I've been "trying" to outlining my novel and I'm epically failing...😐

Huh, If I Run sounds really familiar? I'll have to check it out on Goodreads because I feel like I've seen or heard about it before... (maybe it was from you xD)

AH YES ANDORA'S FOLLY! I want that one too. o.O

Monster comments are the best. xD

Ugh. Outlining. It's so hard. *sobs* You can do this! It takes time but it'll be worth it.

    2. YES I LOVED IT AND I MIGHT BE SEEING IT AGAIN TOMORROW WITH SOME FRIENDS. *cries because it's just so amazing*

Yes, check it out it's so good. Haha, I might've talked about it before because it's really just that good.

I've been keeping up with the Andora's Folly Blog Tour and now I want it even more...

      Yeah, I love long comments.

*sobs with you because outlining is he worst* Thanks, I need all the encouragement to do the thing. *eats pizza because it will make it better*

  3. YES YES OH MY WORD KATIE PLEASE. I MUST KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS SUPERHERO STORY-TO-BE. *screams excitedly*
I feel like my month was sort of superhero-y, but maybe it's just because I still haven't gotten over Homecoming. XD
I HAD A SUPERHERO CHARACTER IDEA ACTUALLY. It doesn't have a plot yet though?? So it's just a lonely superhero hanging around that I desperately want to do something with but a) edits of other things must happen and b) I can't think of a plot?? Which is really unusual for me because normally the plot comes along with the characters in a happy little bundle. But I really want to do something with it because ahem SUPERHEROES OBVIOUSLY. XP

Oooh really? I'll place your superhero character in the background of my superhero story so he feels wanted and loved for now. As long as he doesn't get in the way of the villain and die a tragic death. (I would hate to hand your character back to you in a battered and bruised and lifeless state)

SO PLOT THAT STORY. So we can avoid the disaster above. xD

Don't feel bad about loving movies they TEACH YOU SO MUCH ABOUT GOOD STORIES! I ought to know.

And SEE I TOLD YOU SCORPIO RACES WAS AH-MAZING! Wasn't it totally worth it!??

Hahaha yes Nano... don't worry you are not the only one behind (not talking about myself here of course *cough*) but din't ask me how I am doing I WILL NOT ANSWER....

And superhero story you say??? You must join me! And maybe give some advice since you watch superhero movies and I don't :P I think you will love my idea though xD

YES IT WAS SO GOOOD. I'm so glad I gave it another try! I listened to the audiobook version and I think that really made a difference. :D

*coughcough* So... how's NaNo going? ;)

YES WE CAN WRITE SUPERHERO BOOKS TOGETHER! I may have watched a lot of superhero movies... but I haven't read any books, so we'll see how it goes. xD

Eek, we can do it together! August will be insane but hopefully awesome. :D

I have read like 0 whole novels this month, much less bought any. It's probably because my brain is being mean to me and holding my expectations too high. However I have received an ARC, if that counts as buying.
Good luck with draft two! That's always the hardest draft. Can I just say I love the title Where Shadows Lie? LIKE WHERE DO THEY LIE. TELL ME NOW.

(this is what we older sisters are for, yes? xD)

And you did SUCH AN AWESOME JOB with writing this month! I'm so so so excited for when you have another book ready for beta readers. Song Of The Desert is honest to goodness one of the best books I've read, so I'M EXCITED for another Katie-book!

  15. I may be the weird one when I say that I've been falling quite out of love with movies? I mean, the emotions/shock/thrills you can induce with the music and the visuals is an incredible concept, but I just haven't seen enough good movies in my lifetime to really enjoy it that much anymore. *shrugs* On the bright side, I have loooots on my TBR to satisfy every bookish need! :P

OOH, A SUPERHERO NOVEL? Now that sounds epic. O.o

Heh, I totally get the "problem child" sentiment right now. My WIP has given me so much trouble, and even after Camp NaNo, I'm nowhere near in the story where I'd hoped to be after July. It's come to the point where I'm questioning whether I'm meant to finish this one; I very much want to, but... *sigh* :P

And I am excited to see Tauriel and Kili's relationship begin... *someone please slap this hopeless romantic* I personally don't think its weird for an elf-maiden and a dwarf to fall in love... I think its kind of cute. Especially if Kili is the dwarf (he's adorable!).

Ooh, yes, Legolas is very cool! I heard that he ACTUALLY RUNS OUT OF ARROWS in the last one. How can that be?! That's INCONCIEVABLE. XD

GAHH LEGOLAS!!! He's so much better in the lord of the rings movies, but yes, you heard correctly about him running out of arrows. Although I still have trouble comprehending that idea. (Was that a Princess Bride reference? Because if it was, I GOT IT.)

And yes he's awesome on those movies. I once saw a pin on Pinterest (XD) and it had pictures of Legolas when he's stair-surfing with the shield at Helm's Deep, and the pin said "You can be cool... but not 'Legolas-stair-surfing-while-shooting-Orcs' cool." :D

I wanted to make sure you knew it was me because you might be thinking "Um... why is this MiddleEarthHobbit commenting as if she was part of the conversation?" so please forgive my mistake. I'll try not to do that again. :)

    10. I finished The Desolation of Smaug! I loved it, but DID NOT like where hey chose to end it! I just sat there blink as the screen went dark and I heard "Oh, misty eye of the mountain below..." and I was thinking "No. this is not happening. IT CANNOT END HERE!!"

  27. Oooh, glad you liked Dunkirk! Haven't watched it yet, but want to.

So, have you read "Broken Wings" yet or is that one of the ones that you bought but haven't read yet? I loved the first of the trilogy; it was SO SO good. I should read the second one, but there are so many books before it on my to-read list...

    1. I bought it on Amazon this month (since it was like 5.76 or something crazy inexpensive like that o.o), but I haven't read it yet. THE FIRST ONE WAS SO GOOD. I read it in one sitting and I haven't done that in years. I'm a bit nervous to read this one, though, in case it doesn't live up to the first... :/
