a bookish post

Today I am talking about books. Because... books.

It's been a bit of time since I've had an entire post just dedicated to books. I'm going to be rambling about some of my favorite stories I've read this year -- and include pictures because that's always fun. (I've read 111 books this year so I'm very proud of being able to narrow it down to only a couple)

AND ALSO TALK ABOUT MEETING A CERTAIN AMAZING AUTHOR. AAH.

Below is a list of my five favorite books (and one trilogy) in no order, because putting them into a specific order would be impossible. xD

My mom and I went adventuring in the cold to take pictures of these beautiful books. I carried them for a whole mile and I AM PROUD TO BE A STRONG BOOKWORM. (beside the fact that the neighbors probably now think I'm weird)

(will do anything for books, even if it means kneeing in the sand and walking a mile with VERY HEAVY HARDCOVERS)
-

1. THE RECKONERS TRILOGY

[brandon sanderson | goodreads]

The third book FINALLY CAME OUT THIS YEAR! Ugh, this series. It's hilarious and epic and intense and fun and has superheroes and it's just the best trilogy ever. (or one of them. I say "this is the best book!" to most books I read. :P)

(I have them all in pretty hardcovers and it makes me happy)

2. SOME KIND OF HAPPINESS

[claire legrand | goodreads]

I have to admit -- I picked this book up at the library just because of the cover, because it is SO PRETTY. (I rarely pick up books by their covers, but this one worked out nicely? So maybe I should do it more often?) The simplicity of the colors and the illustration and the fonts... *happy sigh* And then once I read this book, it turned out to be a beautifully deep and lyrical story that is basically just the best. It deals with mental illness in a wonderful way and just READ THE THING.

2. NIMONA
[noelle stevenson | goodreads]

Until this year, I had never read a graphic novel. (at least that I can remember. ha.) I don't know why -- words AND art?! I'm insanely impressed by these alien humans that can draw and write. How... just... how?

Anyways, even though I'm not used to graphic novels, Nimona is now one of my favorite books. Ever. It's such a sweet and humorous read -- shape shifting, superhero powers, and funny banter -- yet has a perfectly bittersweet ending that I just adored. LOVED TO DEATH. There's something about bittersweet endings that will always make me happy. I guess it maybe seems more realistic that way. *shrug*

3. DREAMERS OFTEN LIE

[jaqueline west | goodreads]

This... this book is weird. I mean, a girl hallucinating shakespeare characters?? Who even thinks up a plot like that?

(apparently the author. but I can in fact confirm that the author is as sane as a writer can be, and is very nice. I met her twice and it made me all sorts of happy when she said, "it's Katie Grace, right?" when signing my book. :D)

4. A TIME TO RISE

[nadine brandes | goodreads]

SO. MUCH. EXCITEMENT. *freaks out*

The first line of the book. The last line of the book. EVERY LINE IN THE BOOK. The themes and the characters and the story is just amazing. The series deals with a very thought provoking question -- how would you live if you knew the day you died? And... and you just need to read this series. xD

(If you haven't read this series and are interested... there is a facebook party happening on October 18th, and there will be lots of fun and giveaways! I am 100% going and wouldn't miss it for anything, so DO THE THING.)

5. WINTER
[marissa meyer | goodreads]

*sighs happily over the lunar chronicles*

Winter was actually the first book I read this year, and it obviously was one of the best. Fairytales in space. So much yes.

AND GUESS WHAT?! To continue the bookish excitement...

I MET MARISSA MEYER!

And it was fabulous. She is the sweetest human and treated everyone so nicely. Our writing styles are also very similar -- she writes around six thousand words a day, but then usually ends up scrapping her first draft. Ahh, the problems of speedy drafters. :P

And I got to take a picture with her! And they turned out! I am a bundle of happiness and IT WAS SO MUCH FUN TO MEET MY FAVORITE AUTHOR. (and she's done like a billion NaNoWriMos. It makes me so happy that she loves the NaNo craziness.)

What are your top three favorite books you've read this year?

I kinda liked Fairest? It just gave me a really cool insight to Levana and I'm just amazed by how well Marissa can write a villain. :D

      ALL THE BOOKS. xD

  2. I am so jealous!!! I wish I could meet her, but she isn't coming anywhere near that would make it possible. *sniffs*
Those books look awesome! They all look so interesting, and I have Brandon S' boks on my to read list.
    Awesome post!

    1. *sniffs with you* Well, there will be many future books from her (hopefully) to come, so maybe she'll tour somewhere near you. :D

YES. I like his young adult ones a lot more than his adult ones. The Rithmatist or the Reckoners Trilogy is a good place to start. :D

  3. Everyone keeps going on about Nadine Brandes! I'll try to read one of her books someday.

I wish I could meet some authors but I don't read many different books.

Ahh, yeah, that's hard. You could always keep track of authors coming to your city, and then read their books. If that makes sense. :P

  4. Eek! BOOKS! I must read The Reckoners trilogy!!! I needs it now.

Three favorite books?! How could you ask me that as a fellow bookworm???!!!!! I read WAY too many good ones this year! Let's see:
-Unwind Dystology (I'm about to read Undivided!)
    -The Lunar Chronicles
-Unbroken (If you want to read a heartbreaking true story, READ IT.)
-The Scorpio Races (Excuse me while I go cry over the beautifulness.)
    -The Winner's Trilogy
    -ILLUMINAE (AAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!)
    -The Stormlight Archive
I have more, but I'll stop there. XD

    1. WAIT. YOU HAVEN'T READ THE RECKONERS YET?? UHM. YOU NEED TO DO THAT. NOW.

asdjfkl; you have sooo many beautiful books on there. I need to try the Scorpio Races again -- I don't think I was quite in the right mood when I first tried it.

BUT ILLUMINAE. UGH. GEMINA IS COMING OUT IN NINE DAYS. *needs to reread Illuminae before then* o.o

  6. Oh... oh my. *hallucinates over all the lovely books*

Eek, A TIME TO RISE! I'm still reading it, but I'm close to the end. :D It's been one of the best books ever. I'm just super busy, so I barely get chances to read it.

And the Reckoner's Trilogy! I started Steelheart, but I'm going to be super uber busy (and already am) so I set that one aside while I was still early on in the story so I could save it for a less-busy time when I could REALLY enjoy it. Because school. And trying to keep up with NaNo plotting. Ugh. xP

I must take a look at Some Kinds of Happiness! The cover is so, so lovely. <3

AHHHHH YOU MET MARISSA MEYER. Oh my goodness. That is amazing. Now you've met... how many of your favorite authors? Nadine Brandes, Jaqueline West, Marissa Meyer...

And... *shameful grimace*... I apparently have only read A Time to Rise out of the books you listed? I'm a slow reader in general and have lots of school anyway, + being in an awful reading slump. So yes. My sister and I have been making book wishlists for Christmas so we can devour allll the lovelies after NaNo is over. ;)

    2. Ew business. I understand -- it took me a couple days to read A Time to Rise when I WANTED to binge read it in one day.

Ahhh that makes sense. BUT YOU MUST RETURN TO STEELHEART. Because. Just. Ugh. It's so fantastic and I CANNOT. xD

I KNOW IT MAKES ME SO EXCITED. *happy flailing* I've basically met all of my favorite authors. o.o (except Anne Elisabeth Stengl because her books... <3 <3 <3)

YES. December should be declared national reading month after all the NaNo craziness. xD
Oooh, what are some on your list?

      *flails* Thank youuu.

    3. Yes. -.- BUT I FINISHED IT NOW. Oh my goodness. *hugs book to chest* <3 And gaahhh, the themes are just so... I don't even know how to describe the themes. o.o <3

YES, I PLAN TO. Ha, I love David's metaphors. But I kinda really dislike Megan?? Anyway, I hope that will change. BUT THE CONCEPT IS SO COOL. A supervillain dystopian/sci-fi novel with steel cities? GIMME.

*crazed flailing* Wow. Wow, wow, wow. And eek, yes, Anne Elisabeth Stengl! Did you know she just had a baby? Named after Una, her character. :D

AGREED. Well, I have these on my list...
... All The Lights We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.
... The rest of the Reckoners, of course.
      ... The Lunar Chronicles.
... The Winner's trilogy by Marie... Rutkoski, was it?
      ... The Unwind books.
... AND BASICALLY SO MANY MORE.

    4. I liked Megan more in the rest of the series? I think. She was never my favorite, but... *shrug*

YES. THAT WAS SO ADORABLE. "My newest release." *dyinggggg*

OOoh, you have some great books on the list. UNWIND. LUNAR CHRONICLES. RECKONERS. *faints*

OOH I love the cover for Some Kind Of Happiness so MUCH! I feel like I should read this book ...

You literally want me to pick three favorite books I've read this year? *stares at you* *crickets* Um ... but I've read about eighty books this year and HOW DO I CHOOSE?! I loved Winter and The Hunger Games and Artemis Fowl and Lord Of The Rings and ALL the Narnia books and - and - and I just can't CHOOSE! *refuses to* XD

    -To Kill A Mockingbird

  18. Top three??? Katieee!! Top THREE???! xD
I'm not so sure these are my actual TOP three, but just to pick three that I really really liked... The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest by Melanie Dickerson (the first book I read this year and also quite possibly my favorite of her books), Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix (the first book and probably my favorite of The Missing series), and The Farwalker's Quest by Joni Sensel, which I just read a couple of weeks or so ago. That one really stuck with me for some reason. Like, I don't know if I would call it one of the *best* books I've ever read (although it's definitely great, don't get me wrong), but it just kind of stuck in my head in the days after I read it. It was one of those books that makes you feel as if you've physically gone through everything the main character has gone through, so you just get so emotionally torn to pieces by the end that you don't really know what to do. xD

Also may I just say that your hair... it just looks super cute. xD
