Camp NaNo Craziness

Tuesday, April 19, 2016
A random Tuesday post? Oh yes. I couldn't fit it in anywhere else this month, so... surprise!

This April's Camp was interesting. Challenging. Full of improvisation. *dies* I started off the month by almost putting barbeque sauce instead of chocolate sauce on my ice cream, so that showed how ready I was. :P

I'm going to quickly recap this  Camp journey like I did for November last year. Here we go.

day one // 3,599

WELL. Camp started off kind of horribly. I was excited for this story -- SO EXCITED. I started writing it happily at midnight. But something just wasn't working. The main character's voice felt off to me. The whole story felt off to me.

So I started with a different beginning. That didn't work.
I started with different tenses and point of views. That didn't work.
I skipped to the middle of the novel. That didn't work.

I tried writing five different beginnings. None worked.

So, naturally... The next step was to start a new novel.

Yup. A totally, unplanned, spur-of-the-moment novel. Whether or not I have much of a plot... debatable. We'll see how it goes.
day two // 10,212

Day two was... better, I guess? Anna and I ventured together in writing 10k1day. AND WE BOTH SUCCEEDED. So. Yay! xD Even though I don't have a plot and I don't know what I'm doing, words are happening.

Still sad about pitching Little Red Rain Coat (for the time being), but I'm happy. Aw yes.
-
day three // 10,051

TODAY WAS A CRAZY DAY. I came home from Church, grabbed my computer, plopped on the bed, and just wrote.
And wrote.
And wrote.

I didn't really stop writing, either. My fingers were on FIRE. (almost literally. Ouch.) I almost quit once I got to 9k, but since I was so stinkin' close to 10k... I had to write that extra thousand. :P
day four // 905

Slow day, but that's okay because...

a) I NEEDED A BREAK. Desperately.

b) go back to point A. I don't have any other excuse. I just didn't feel like writing that much.
-
day five // 1,477

Look at this. Another day with plot problems. NO SURPRISE.

Halfway into today my main character changed genders. No, they're not having gender identity problems. I just decided that it would be better with a dude main character instead of a lady. Which is weird, because I've never written from a guy's perspective before?

SO MUCH EDITING IS GOING TO BE NEEDED. xD
-
day six // 0

No writing. Much procrastination. Blame the internet.
-
day seven // 2,553

MAKING PROGRESS. Writing is exhausting, guys. I'm learning that now more than ever. xD

Today was another sloooow writing day. I just need to WRITE this thing. But it's hard to write when it's so. stubborn. *grumble* At least my main character isn't changing genders now. So that's good. :P
-
day eight // 0

Another day of zero words written. *sigh* I blame it on the fact that I woke up to snow. (in April. NOT ALLOWED.)

Also I met a NYT bestelling author, Jacqueline West. Much excitement. :D

One more excuse to blame it on: I'm writing 15k tomorrow. I need time to mentally prepare. Obviously.

ew snow. WHYYYY.
day nine // 15,033

WELL.
THIS WAS AN EXHAUSTING DAY.
I started off by staying up until 2am. I wrote 5k, which only left 10k for when I woke up. Even though it sounds insane, it was a very good idea for me. I write SO much better at night than I do in the morning. It would've taken me four or five hours to write 2k in the morning compared to only two hours after midnight. xD

Aimee was super awesome and joined me with warring all day to help keep me aliveee. She's an amazing and talented writer, you guys. <3 She did 15k, too, so go congratulate her cause I couldn't have done it without her.

Surprisingly... even though this day was tiring, I actually finished by 7pm. It all went very fast. I'm on a general writing high with feeling good about this story and writing in general. SO YAY!
-
day ten // 1,689

I was GOING to take a break today, but the words were calling to me. I wrote the first death in this novel, so... yay? Or sadness? Depending on how you look at it. :P (I personally think it's rather fun, but, shhh)

BUT MY NECK HURTS SO BADLY. I was worried about my wrists for this month, but I can't get this ache out of my neck from bending over the computer screen. Over books. Over school. Just bending my neck over in general. Ouch.

Finished up the day with watching The Martian with the family. I have so much love for that movie, you guys. <3
-
day eleven // 5,482

WORDS ARE COMING. I'm writing like crazy and it feels amazing. Days like this make me love writing. xD
-
day twelve // 2,077

Up until this point in the book, I really haven't had a plot. BUT THAT'S CHANGING! I know where I'm going. I know the ending. I know what's going on and I couldn't be happier. Hopefully this means lots of words for the next few days.

But first...
...cookies.

Or just the cookie dough. Who even eats baked cookies, anyways?

-
day thirteen // 4,258

Mwahaha, the cookies helped! I'm only starting to worry a bit, now... I want to finish this book by the 15th, but by the looks of it... I'm not sure if that's going to happen? I HOPE. I'll write madly to try to accomplish the goal.

*dons writerly super-cape*
-
day fourteen // 3,097

So I WANTED to finish by the fifteenth... but I see how impossible that's looking, now. I went to a baseball game with my family (which included reading, because sports aren't exactly my thing...), and decided to enjoy that instead of worrying about writing. The worrying only came about when I got home. ;)

-
day fifteen // 736

YOUTH RETREAT TIME! Every April my youth group goes to a conference over a weekend. We spend time listening to a bunch of speakers, worshiping, and rocking out to loud music on the car ride there and back. :P

I managed to write around 700 words at night, but decided to stop because I didn't want to become that "annoying, loudly typing writer" in the hotel room. :P
-
day sixteen // 0

Nope. Absolutely no writing done today, and I'm OKAY WITH IT. Too busy learning about our awesome God, playing games, eating pizza, and giggling until two in the morning with my awesome friends. So much amazing. <3
-
day seventeen // 419

It's not the easiest trying to write off of 10 hours of sleep in the last two days. I wrote a little bit, but that's all I could manage. :P

The GOOD thing is... is that I'm closer than I realized to the finish! Like, REALLY CLOSE. I could probably finish this novel in a couple days close. *screaming until my voice grows hoarse*
-
day eighteen // 1,849

WELL. GUESS WHAT?!?!?

I.
FINISHED.
MY.
NOVEL.

*throws glitter and confetti and eats cookies and pizza and screams forever and ever* The ending came so suddenly. I was close -- so close -- and then all of a sudden BOOM. I'm finished.

This novel is an absolute mess. Especially the first half. Just... there's so much rewriting that's going to be one. But I'm not going to worry about that now. Right now it's going to sit in the document for a good, looooong while.
-
Snippet because why not?

(these characters are ridiculous. Their names are kind of ridiculous. But this whole novel is a ridiculous mess so what can I say?)

Now what?
For the rest of Camp I'm going to try to relax. Read lots of books. Catch up on beta reading and critiquing. Hopefully get ahead on blog posts. I'm going to take advantage of this time I have left while my book is still getting read by other people.

And when May comes...
... then begins the edits again. o.o

BUT I'LL JUST NOT THINK ABOUT THAT. xD

*ends this semi-rambling random Tuesday post*

// katie grace

How is Camp going for you?? Are you surviving?
Also, cookie dough or cookies? ;)

  1. Oh wow... I was so happy when I reached my goal of 7,000 words... for me that is a lot I thought it would be so much harder because I almost failed writing 300 words each day last month but this month I have averaged 400+.

  2. Oh wow, you did amazing! I totally could not do that. I'm so almost at my 15k goal (I raised it from 8k after reaching it on the sixth day) but somehow I'm finding the last three hundred (yup, that's how much I've got left) really hard, and my mind just goes blank when I look at the document...
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who tries to write and then somehow ends up procrastinating. All. Day. :P

I love the snippet, although I would ask whether you mean to have 'slamming your wall into the head' or the other way around. :) The characters sound funny, and I like their weird names, they just seem to suit.

P.S. Dough is pretty good and must always be sampled when biscuits are being made, but I'll take the cooked ones too if they're on offer. :)

    1. 8k in six days?! That's more than 1k a day! Way to go, Jane! :D *dances for you*

GASP. Oh my gosh, how did I miss that? I cannot tell you how many times I glanced over that snippet making sure that there were no typos. Well. I guess that makes it all the more NaNo-ish and ridiculous. *sigh*

Ooh, biscuit dough? I've never tasted that before.

    2. I did it, I did it! I've finished my 15k words now! I could NOT believe how many words I was writing per day, now 1 thousand seems way easy! Camp NaNo has officially changed my writing speed. :D SO glad I decided to do it.

    4. I'm taking a bit of a break now! What with starting up a new serial blog story, and my little brothers begging me to write another short story for their collection I will be doing a bit more work, but a little more relaxed and casual. :) It was really fun though!

    1. OOH, frozen cookie dough? I've never tried that before. Seems like something I need to do. :D

*flops* I'm honestly surprised myself. xD It ended up being a space story about stars. I'm working on a blurb and piecing together an actual plot because even I don't really know what it's about right now. xD

  9. *THROWS CONFETTI AGAIN EVEN THOUGH I ALREADY DID IT* CONGRATULATIONSSS ON FINISHING! Also, oh my gosh, how did you write 10k on our shared 10k day AND the day after? WHAT EVEN KATIE, WHAT SORT OF MAGIC IS THIS? Also, I see I'm not the only person who's had problems with the MC changing gender xD

Also, the Martian is so fabulous, I cannot even words.

I am surviving Camp I guess? I'm guessing there's around 10k-20k left in my novel so I'm going to TRY and finish by the end of the week because after this week life is crazy.

Also, cookie dough. Always cookie dough, unless the baked cookies are really, really good with milk xD

The Martiannnn. <3 SO MUCH LOVE FOR THAT MOVIE.

You are totally gonna be able to do this. You wrote 10k in one stinkin' DAY. You can do 20k in a week. *nodnod* I HAVE FAITH IN YOU.

I dunno. Cookies with milk? I'VE NEVER UNDERSTOOD IT. But... good for you for liking them, I guess? xD

    2. Well uh yeah of course you were exhausted xD

      YESSS.

I ACTUALLY FINISHED MY NOVEL TODAY SO IM REALLY HAPPY.

I think it happened when I had braces because some cookies were really, really hard when they were baked and milk softened them? I don't know, but I guess with braces I was desperate xD

    3. AAAAHHH YESSSS I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU. GOOD LUCK EDITING. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ THIS NOVEL. xD

Oohh, that makes sense. Though those must've been some hard cookies. o.o I like mine very soft. xD (soft? sounds like the cookies are furry now. Sigh, I don't even know how to do words anymore. xD)

OH NO. Somehow I did math wrong. It was actually 65,005 in 18 days, but my zombie NaNo brain must've gone crazy somewhere in there. Close enough, though. ;)

I DON'T KNOW. Lots of word wars, typing like I'm some mad scientist, and having someone do it with me all helped. :P

It was at 80k, but then I realized my novel wasn't going to be that long. So I lowered it to 60k. I might do some brainstorming that I count as some words or blurb writing, but... yeah.

      (Cookie dough for the win!)

Cookie dough is the best thing in the world and I question sometimes the decision to bake it. We had a tub of it in the fridge recently and I'm pretty sure I (secretly) ate as much as we baked??? Yet I have no shame. xD Ice cream is also the best thing in the world. I'm very glad you didn't ruin yours with barbecue sauce. (thank youu ahhh <3)

  23. Katie, just wanted to say thank you for stopping by my blog! I had fun reading about your CampNaNo experience. Sounds like it was quite the challenge, but congrats on completing your novel! It's been a while since I did NaNoWriMo (being a working woman and all) but who knows? Maybe one of these days I'll delve back into the craziness again.

    1. You should DEFINITELY delve back into the craziness. It's... crazy... (ha), but so worth it. They're so much fun. :D

  24. Also... I am going to have a Beta readers sign up next week, and I was wondering how you put the word attachment into the email?

    1. Ooh, how exciting! And scary. o.o There should be a little file attachment in the email. It usually looks like a paperclip.

  26. Katie, that snippet made me laugh so hard. But to be honest, I didn't even notice it the first time I read it because I was too busy banging my own wall against the head. (I thought my life was double-booked at 15 years of age...)

Cookie dough, definitely. Only for some cookies, though. Not all cookie doughs are equal.

Camp...ugh. I'm surviving, but barely. This is my 'writing week,' and my goal is 15,000 in 5 days. I shocked myself by writing 2000 words in 1 hour last night. My usual going rate is 1000 words per hour. :) The rest of the month has been/will be devoted to editing, because I'm publishing my first book in just a few months!! *EEEKKKK!!!* I'm pretty much worded out though, so forgive me if none of this makes any sense.

    1. 2,000 in one hour? YESSS. That's seriously impressive. *gives you amazing cookie dough*
Wow. I have so much respect. Publishing a novel when you're a teen?? AAH. What's it about?

    2. Yes, I'm publishing as a teen (granted, on the older end of teenager). It's Historical Fiction, based on the true story of my great-great grandparents, who came from Chicago to Washington State in the late 1800's.

    3. Still! That's awesome. Being published as a teenager would be such a great accomplishment...

      Aaaw, that's so sweet! <3

  27. Wow! That's so, so much done, Katie! I am so envious of your ability to speed through your drafts like that. I never can find the time to spend for 15k in a day, I always have to do something else! :P But that's so awesome you finished this novel. What genre is it? Do you have a basic premise you could share? To tell the truth I'm a little disappointed about "Little Red Raincoat" getting put aside but if you got that much done in something else you deserve some serious congrats regardless. Great work!

    1. It's a sci-fi story called "A Twisted Stars." It's... about stars. :P I hardly even know what it's about at this point, but I'm going to work on a proper blurb to come. :D

I KNOW. I'm really disappointed about it, too, actually. I will DEFINITELY write it at some point, but right now it just needs a lot more planning. *sigh*

      Thank you! <3

  28. Wow. _Wow_, Katie. That's... That's... All I have to say.

(Except "Cookies!" and "snow!" and "Why can't we have your snow? We didn't get a winter this year. *pouts*)

    See? Nothing else to say.

    2. No snow. *moans* Not even very many below-freezing temperatures. *sighs* I would if I could...

  30. That's amazing! I'm so impressed! I'm also super impressed that you tracked that everyday. Did you write a little bit of this post each day or just remember everything? Either way, props to you and cool idea!

    1. EEEP! Thank you!
Ha, well, I did some of that. I used the Camp NaNo site to track how many words I wrote each day. And then mostly went off of activities I had on my calendar. I couldn't remember EXACTLY when my MC changed genders, but I knew it was in the earlier days. So some of it was a little bit of guessing. :P

  31. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
    That sounds absolutely amazing!

  32. I loved this post! Like, a lot! I love reading other people's journeys/cookie baking exploits/why do we even pretend not to enjoy character deaths? AHA! AHA! AHAHAHAHAHA!

Congratulations. Seriously, like, wow. People like you/Cait/Aimee never fail to stun and shock me. It took me two years to write one book!??!! But I guess something we have to accept is that everyone is different, everyone works differently, IT'S ALL DIFFERENT. (So, apparently, was your MC's gender. That must've been a surprise!) Also, I'm so impressed that you jumped in there with a new idea. How new was it? How long had it been fluttering around your head?

    1. ALL THE CHARRIES DEATHS MWAHAHA. It's a guilty pleasure authors get to partake in. ;)

RIGHT?! Aimee and Cait are also insane. Just, wow.
It was a couple months new? I had it floating around in my brain for awhile, but it just didn't have much of a plot. :P

  33. Congratulations! Sounds like you had an exciting month. :) It's actually really encouraging to know that you didn't figure out your plot until 50k words in -- I've been afraid to continue my NaNo novel (stuck somewhere around 25k words) because it doesn't exactly have a solid plot. At least, I don't think it does. In any case, I have no idea where it's going. There might have to be a sequel? Ack.
