April Highlights // 2016

Saturday, April 30, 2016
And now we're 1/4 of the way done through the year. No need to freak out. ;)
Let's get right into the post, since I'm horrible at coming out with interesting intros. I could just shout, PIZZA, but somehow I don't think that would be appropriate.

// I GOT MY LICENSE! I haven't driven many places yet (simply because I stink at all directional things), but I've gone to Church and picked up pizza. I'll go to the library soon. That's basically all the places I need to drive too. :P

// 400 Twitter followers?? I thought that was kind of cool. I'm so blessed by all the friends I've met through it! <3

// Speaking of Twitter... I met Amanda IN PERSON from Twitter! She was so sweet and awesome. <3

// YOUTH CONFERENCE. An awesome weekend full of faith, friends, and fun. (that alliteration, though) I hope to do a post about some things I learned later next month. :D

// I GOT A JOB AT STARBUCKS. So. Much. Excitement. I survived an interview and several phone calls (talking on the phone is not fun), and I must've done okay, since I got the job. :P I start in two days and am really nervous, so prayers would be very appreciated. <3

// Some blog milestones: 150 of you hanging out in the GFC section, and 50,000 pageviews! (um, woooow.)

// FIRST THUNDERSTORM SINCE LAST YEAR. All the happiness because I love thunderstorms. <3

// I officially have tickets to see Captain America: Civil War. On May 5th. That's in five days. I'm not ready. *screams*

I resisted the temptation to buy a million books this month and settled for only two. Look at me being all responsible. ;)

The first book I bought was Princess of the Midnight Ball. This is an old favorite. I first read it when I was twelve or so, and still enjoy it with every reread. <3

The next one is Dreamer's Often Lie. It's about a girl who starts hallucinating (or is she?) Shakespeare characters after she's involved in a skiing accident. I just... wow. The writing was brilliant and it was a very fascinating and slightly eerie read.

What's also cool in the realm of "book things..." Is that I got to meet the author of Dreamer's Often Lie! I went to Jacqueline West's release party.

I sadly didn't make it into the picture since I'm in the left corner. But you get to see my dad who's directly to the right of Jacqueline. xD (*waves to my dad* :P)

I've never done anything like this before, so it was a fun experience. I got to meet her, listen to an excerpt of the book, and play some Shakespearean mad libs. :P Not to mention that the bookstore was awesome and had a whole basement full of YA books. *swoons*

ANYWAYS. Back to book reading for the month. This month's total...

Yeah. Compared to other months this year it wasn't the greatest. But I did write a whole book, so I'll use that as an excuse. ;)

It was kind of a "eh" reading month. Most of the books I read were somewhere between 2-3 stars. I read a lot more fiction books for school, too, so that was interesting.

Favorite book: The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. I've read this book three times now. It's such a sweet and light fantasy read. <3
Favorite cover: Rebel of the Sands. ACK. It's so pretty. It has a very "Song of the Desert-ish" feel. If only the book was good, though. I was so bored. :/
Average rating: 3.23 stars. (aw, yeah. Katie doing math for a blog post. My mom should be proud. :P)
-
// emily shares an AMAZING short story on her blog told from the POV of bunny slippers and I'm just in awe.

// what it looks like being an editor.

// rachel interviewed me!

// as did Jessi. (too interviews in one month? Exciting.)

// why these future fears? A poem about the future.

I summed up most of my writing happenings for this month in my "Camp NaNo Craziness" post. Apparently I wasn't very clear on what I actually wrote in the beginning of April. Oops. (that's what I get for writing posts at nearly one in the morning.)

The novel I just wrote is called A Twisted Star. I tried writing a blurb for it, but since half of the book doesn't really have a plot... I can only promise that it holds golden blood, silver tears, light-sucking prisons, snarky characters, and light in the darkness. *insert simple cover*

As for progress on Song of the Desert... I haven't worked on it this month. AT ALL. For the first time in a year, I'm doing anything related to it or the sequel. It feels very weird. But also refreshing? The break is actually making me more excited to start editing again. (that feeling will probably change as soon as May 1st comes. ha.)

In case you weren't aware, I'm not working on Song of the Desert because it's currently in the hands of beta readers. So far I don't have to make any huge plot changes. Just scenes and inconsistencies. Those can be petty, but they also really help the book take shape. I'm feeling confident. :D

// pictures lead to the post //

// what I learned about sending my novel to beta readers.
// making your novel into an ACTUAL book. Like, a book form. That you can hold. Aw yes.
// other posts that are still being decided on. :P (I'm not THAT organized.)

// katie grace

So, what's happened for you in the month of April?
Since Civil War is coming out soon, are you #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan? Or do you not care? :P

  1. Meeting authors is sooo exciting! (Well, I think it would be. I've never actually done it though. I've imagined many different scenarios) 'A Twisted Star' sounds pretty cool - I love snarky charries! :D
Can't wait to hear what you learned from all the beta readers! I really, really enjoyed helping you out with that. :)

Congrats that you got your license! All my friends are getting so old...I'll be getting my license next year too. *runs away screaming to find Neverland so I don't have to grow up*

    1. Oh my gosh, I always imagine different scenarios, too. xD I don't think they'll ever go how I envision them in my head... but... it's still fun. :P

EEK! You'll be getting your license, too? How exciting. :D *sigh* If you find your way to Neverland, will you please take me with you? I'd really like that. :P

      Delete
    2. Yup, almost all my imaginings on that topic end with me becoming best buddies with the author and them (all powerful people as they are) helping me get a book published. :P

Neverland might be a little to far, and besides, I don't know how to fly. I guess I'll just stick with the excuse of being a writer - and writers can't grow up or they'll lose their imagination! xD
But if I ever do stumble across Neverland, I'll remember to take you on an epic quest somewhere. ;D

Mostly because I STILL haven't seen TWS . . . the only time I manage movie-watching anymore is when my whole family does it and my whole family is not into superhero movies. Sadly.
I'm glad you had a good Camp NaNo! Your story sounds amazing, and I want to read it. :D

  9. It sounds like we have both had pretty good months! You read 17(!!!) Books and that's not a good month?!? Haha. And you did Camp Nano. Wow. This month wasn't the best for me reading wise. I only read nine books.
I got so excited when I saw your picture. I started finding all of the places I know. That bookstore is the best. A little pricey at times but not too bad. We seriously have to try to meet up at one of the events in May, Or even just meet at a bookstore

  12. 1/4 OF THE WAY THROUGH THE YEAR?! *hyperventilates* (also, you TOTALLY could have just yelled pizza, that so would have worked as an intro)

YOU GOT YOUR LICENSE!!! I too have terrible problems with directions :(. My eight-year-old brother is better at directions than I am *sigh*. And yes, church, pizza place, and library, that is all you need. *nods* (don't get lost, kay Katie? That would be bad. *nods sagely*)

You got a job at Starbucks. *gapes* That is SO cool! I agree about talking on the phone. But you survived! *does happy dance for you* I'll be praying!

Thunderstorms are awesome :). We've already had multiples this year (and one tornado, so ... that was ... interesting).

YOU GOT TO MEET AN AUTHOR OH MY WORD THAT IS SO INCREDIBLY AWESOME, KATIE!!! *takes a deep breath* Dreamer's Often Lie is probably going to end up on my TBR :).

Ooo, you read Goose Girl? I remember that book, I liked it! Are you planning on reading the rest of the series? (and I just saw that you read a book titled 'the extroverted writer'. For some reason that struck me as funny :D) And I CANNOT believe you read 17 books and read a WHOLE novel! How ... how even? That shouldn't even be possible.

AHH I WANT TO READ 'A TWISTED STAR' SO BAD IT LOOKS SO GOOD!!! Also, I love the cover you made for it :D.

As for Civil War ... well, uh, I've actually never watched any Avengers movies, so I have no clue whatsoever XD.

    3. *whisper* Yes, both side with #TeamCap. ;)

PIZZA! There. I yelled it. Appropriate for comments, too? :P

So many people are better with directions than me. Which is good, I suppose. Then there's not double the amount of people freaking out about which street to travel down. :P

Thank you so much, Savannah! <3 Prayers are much appreciated for tomorrow since I'm shaking with nerves. I'm sure it'll be fine, but it's just a scary, new experience.

Oh dear. o.o Tornadoes aren't quite as fun... Well, they can be as long as they're not *really* dangerous. Then it's just kind of exciting. :P But as soon as homes or people are getting hurt... nope.

Yes! I own "Enna Burning," so I'll be reading that book soon. I have the other two on hold at the library. I don't remember liking the rest of the series very much? But that was several years ago, so maybe my opinions have changed since then. *shrugs* Have you read the rest of the series?

EEEP! I hope someday you'll be able to read it! It has so many revisions to go through... But I'm overall pretty excited about this story.

      Delete
    4. Well, if you say so! (I always did feel that Captain America was better than Iron Man anyways) *happily skips to #TeamCap and takes Emily with her*

      PIZZA WORKS AT ALL TIMES.

I would be a mess if I was starting a job (especially my FIRST job!), but I bet you'll do just fine. *nods* You'll have to let us know how it goes!

Yep, once there's damage, then it's not so fun. But there wasn't much damage with the one that landed near us, so it was just exciting :D.

I can't recall if I read 'Enna Burning" ... huh. Weird. I feel like I should remember that. Maybe I should just read it again so I remember it properly :D. And I can't remember if I read the rest of the series, either! Something must be wrong with me, I never forget books XD.

I HOPE TO READ IT SOMEDAY TOO! ... but yeah, there is always that little thing called 'revision' that gets in the way. *sigh* I am not a fan of edits. But yeah, if it ever needs beta readers ... *raises hand* *raises both hands* Because I must read ALL the Katie words! :D

Yay! :D Glad there was no damage. That's always a relief. :P

I just read it today, and it was good! I liked the characters and the plot. I think I like the Goose Girl just a bit better. But not by much.

*happy squeal* I hope that you can someday read all the Katie words! As long as I get to beta all the Savannah words. ;)

  24. AHHHH THIS MONTH MUST HAVE BEEN REALLY EVENTFUL FOR YOU!!!

To get a student permit over here, I heard you have to be 17, and for a nonprofessional license 18 :( still pretty far away for me but I really want to learn how to drive once I turn 17!

JOBS! This is so crazy but whenever I think of something or do something writing related I check your blog out and you have a post about it! (Ex.: Hannah and her post on book blurbs) Anyway, my family & I were discussing about how maybe next summer I could work in one of our restaurants like check the waitresses' uniforms, see if the orders come out in time, or even take orders! But I'm terrified of interacting with strangers like that if ever they pressure me about the menu and I have nothing to answer :P

Ooh this April I got into TV/movies a lot. Like I watched The Huntsman, High Strung, and Civil War in theatres. Then I just got into the TV show The Strain and now American Horror Story (yes I'm 3/4 years late to watching it)

And whaaaaaat Captain America Civil War isn't out yet in the States? I watched it on April 27! I really enjoyed it, but I felt like the plot was a bit messy--but that's just me and I looove to overanalyze plots.

Oh and this month if I never said we went to Japan for two weeks! It was so awesome, I swear, and the best part was going to Disney Sea & Land. May we're probably going to Auckland, and I'm so excited because I just finished watching LoTR the first time ever and we'll visit the Hobbit movie set if ever we go.

Hope you enjoy it! (And I'm team Captain America 89% of the girl on his team who has the freakiest, awesomest powers ever) But I'm super looking forward to X Men: Apocalypse more!

    1. YEAH IT WAS. o.o

Aaww, that's sad. *sniff* I hope you're able to learn how to drive right away! I've been very happy that I didn't wait.

Whoah, that's crazy. xD Oooh, that would be really awesome! I'm sure the restaurant would take you through lots of training and food tasting -- at least I hope they would. Starbucks has SO much training to go through, but at least I'll feel more comfortable this way. :D

WAAHT?! IT'S OUT? O.O *moves to Australia* (that's where you are, right?) Oh my goodness. So, you liked it? Did it live up to your expectations? AHH I'm freaking out for you. xD

Whoah, you went to Japan? Wow. Goodness, you had an exciting month! What were you there in Japan for? Just vacation?

    2. *wishes I DID live in Australia* I'm actually from the Philippines! As a matter of fact I think movies do come out a bit earlier here :)

I DID enjoy it! I feel it's on a completely different vibe compared to The Avengers, but the plot twist in the end really suprised me. Just saying, the trailer isn't the entire story if that's what you think it is! You have to tell me who your favorite character is once you finish the movie because I picked mine :)

Yeah, we did go to Japan for vacation! We usually go to Vegas for summer (it's like my home in the States and I love it so much) and the year we DIDN'T go to Vegas was the year there was a huge book convention, Romance Talk I believe. A lot of YA authors went and it just made me sooo sad I could've gone. But Japan was fun!

    3. Ohhh, I think I remember you saying that! I forget things like that so quickly. :P

Ooh, plot twist. Eek! I'm squealing about seeing it so badly. I'll definitely let you know who my favorite character is. Going into the movie it's Bucky, but we'll see if that changes.

Ooooh, that sounds like fun! And sad that you weren't able to make it to the book convention. :/ I hate it when two events run into each other like that. *sigh* Hopefully there will be another one next time you go to Vegas. :)

  25. Wow, looks like we've got quite the lot of Captain America fans here. I've occasionally seen him, and he looks pretty cool. Never watched a full Avengers movie before. *hides face*
You got a license?! What?! I'd be scared to drive a car....wow, girl, you're brave! Go you! (and don't get lost, okay? 'cause we need you here) =)
A JOB?!?!? Like, a real live job. At a real live place. That's huge!!! Oh, wow,I will be praying!
THUNDERSTORMS ARE SO AWESOME I WILL FAN-GIRL ABOUT THEM WITH YOU FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. *throws confetti* Was your thunderstorm a big one?? Those are always awesome. =) And yes, if you read Savannah's comment, we did get a tornado. The warning was very unexpected, the tornado didn't stick around for long BUT IT WAS SO EXCITING AND ALWAYS WILL BE. I JUST LOVE STORMS IF YOU CANNOT TELL. *deep breath* Okay, I'm done.
I love your writing style, girl, and you do such a good on your blog posts! I can tell you really take time to do it, and want to make sure your blog readers have a good experience. Keep blogging!!

    3. I'll try not to get lost. Thankfully there's always a GPS on the phone in case I get myself into a real mess. :P

THANK YOU FOR PRAYING. It's quite nerveracking and a big life thing so prayers are always appreciated. <3

Sigh, no. Sadly not a big thunderstorm. There was just one clap of thunder. :P Later in the month we had a little bit bigger one, but not by much. Oh well -- hopefully there will be more soon. :D

Aaw, thank you, Anna! And are you and Savannah sisters? That's cool. ^.^

    4. Okay, good. Oh, and I didn't know you had GPS! You should be just fine, then. =)
And you're welcome! How did your first day on the job go??
Oh, well. This is what I say: half the fun of a big thunderstorm is watching the storm clouds roll in, so it's okay to get the little storms as long as you get BIG storm clouds. =) But yes, I bet you guys will get big ones this summer. (!!!!) Okay, I think I fan-girl a little too much sometimes. :p
Yep! Savannah and I are sisters. Oh, and my name is actually not Anna. That's my mom's name. I just accidentally commented under her name! My real name is Ariel. =)

    5. It went well! Thanks for asking. :D I mostly went through paperwork, some training books, a tour of the store, coffee tasting, dress code, and other general things. HOPEFULLY in the next two weeks I'll be able to do some actual training with another partner. :D

Ooh, okay! That's neat. Ariel is a pretty name. :)

    1. had an interesting conversation with my bestie over this the other day. My religion teacher actually asked why the heck two super heroes were fighting each other. It was really entertaining. Bestie is team iron man though:(. JK. I'm not really fully for either. I hadn't even seen a single marvel movie until last labor day!(HOW?????) It was great...can't wait to see the next one

  30. ...Oh look. Now I'm freaking out. 1/4 OF THE WAY THROUGH THE YEAR THIS ISN'T OKAY.
Congratulations about Starbucks! That's exciting! I know a few friends who have worked at Starbucks, you'll have to write a post about how you like it.
I want to hear more about your novel!

    1. EEK SO MUCH EXCITEMENT. :D Do you know if your friends enjoyed working there?

Er, I can't promise a post on the novel, so I'll just leave it at a maybe. It's such a mess that the whole plot will likely change, so I might just wait until I start editing. xD

  31. Congrats on the new job and license! Getting my license was the most freeing thing ever. Suddenly I'm like a real adult (although a very scared one at first, haha). I've heard that working at Starbucks is a really great experience, so I hope it goes well for you.

That book Do More Better, looks like something I would really enjoy. I might have to check it out:)

    1. Yay! I'm glad you've heard good things. I've heard good things about the company in general which is why I applied there. Hoping it'll all go well. :D

You definitely should! There were some tips in there that I liked.

  33. I love your "Twisted Star" concept. It looks super interesting, with or without a blurb. Is that the one you wrote by hand? Are you still writing it by hand or did you type some of it up? I am so impressed that you can do that without hand cramps and writing yourself into corners without being able to easily go back and fix things.
I think I'm pretty much for Team Cap, but we'll see how it pans out. What about yourself?

    1. HA. Wow, you have a good memory. xD That was the one I was ORIGINALLY going to write by hand... but since I suddenly ditched Little Red Rain Coat and needed a new story idea, that was the only one. So sadly I didn't get to write it by hand. Hopefully I'll be able to do it with a different one some day. :D

Yess, so far i'm Team Cap. The movie may change me, but I've decided on that so far.

    2. Ah, I see. That's too bad you didn't get to try it by hand...perhaps that's what you could do with Little Red Rain Coat? But you've probably thought of that already. :P
I feel like I'll see points of reason in arguments for both IronMan and Cap, but ultimately, I side with Cap more. So excited to see it and jealous of your tickets!

  35. YOU GOT YOUR LICENSE AND A JOB AT STARBUCKS?!?!

I'm planning on getting my license this year or next year.

I feel like I'm wasting my life sometimes :/

    Thanks for the blog recommendations!

  36. So many lovely things! Congratulations on that driver's license! I'm the same way with directions; it's really ridiculous. Yay for thunderstorms and Princess of the Midnight Ball—that's one of my absolute favorites. <3 The Goose Girl is also wonderful. That little glimpse of what will be included in your novel totally grabbed me. Thank you for the shoutout to my post, too!

Oh, and Team Cap. As appears to be the trend.

  37. Congrats on your license and your job! You're, like, an adult ;) I hope Starbucks is going well for you :)

I haven't read a single one of those books, I'm afraid, though your RotS opinion is not a popular one, everyone's told me to read it! My best book was We Were Liars.
