I Wrote 20,000 Words In One Day... And Survived.

Saturday, August 6, 2016

The title basically says it all.

I may have survived, but it was a tiring and grim battle. Full of yawns and loads of typos and complaining about why I even signed up for this in the first place.

To make matters even worse... I had to work for five hours. I thought that I worked the day before, but when double checking my schedule, I realized that I worked the 26th. The day I had planned to write twenty thousand words. Cue the mini freakout. :P

My basic plan:
12-3:00am // write 5k.
9:00am-4:00pm // write 10k.
9:00pm-12:00 // finish my other 5k.

For your entertainment, I've complied an hour by hour update on my crazy adventure. Go ahead and take joy in my torture I put on myself. :P

twelve // 2,000

I meant to totally be prepared and start off strong -- midnight on the dot. But, I was busy running around trying to find my computer charger, soundproof headphones, and finish my slice of pizza. (piizzaaaa. o.o)

BUT. After I finished running around like a chicken with its head cut off (is my family the only family who uses the expression?), I sat my butt down and wrote like a madwoman.

one // 2,000

(I didn't keep track of my word count for all the hours, so these are estimates but fairly accurate estimates. *says the person who can never estimate for her life*)

Still feeling good. Kind of dead. But mostly awake and ready to conquer this 20k day.

two // 1,000

See how I just mentioned, "mostly awake" above? Ha. Not anymore. It was pretty much torture getting through the last 1k, but I finished at around 2:30. Boom.

NOW TIME TO SLEEP before I tackle the rest tomorrow. o.o 15k remaining!

three // 0

*snore*

four // 0

*more snoring*

five // 0

*actually no snoring because I don't actually snore??*

six // 0

*maybe some cricket chirping here and there*

seven // 0

*silence*

eight // 0

*ALARM NOISES*

(my alarm is a very soothing church bell sound, but once a random lady had it as her ringtone, and I thought I was waking up from a dream. A random fact about my life you obviously had to know.)

Wake up. Drag myself out of bed. Shower. Get dressed into my motivational pizza shirt.

9:00 // 1,016

(began writing at 9:30)
Started off the day with word warring Aimee and Anna, who joined me on this completely insane writing adventure.

So far, going great. I'm definitely not awake, but I'm not dead yet. (I would say that's a plus.)

10:00 // 1,668

The "going great" part from the last hour has turned into, "it's going well." I'm already starting to feel tired. :P

11:00 // 1,314

Everything is going downhill. Spotify is malfunctioning, which means no music. I've already wrote past the little outline I wrote up yesterday night, so I have no idea what I'm doing. My stomach is growling. I am tired.

12:00 // 1,863

Things have improved. (this whole day is basically a huge slope of ups and downs. xD #writerslife)

I have food (though nothing exciting -- just toast. *weeps at the lack of pizza*), caffeine (mountain dew xD), and my spotify RETURNS. Let's do this writing thing.

Also, I hit 10k! BUT NOW I HAVE FOUR HOURS TO WRITE 6k AND HOPEFULLY THAT'S POSSIBLE.

1:00 // 1,739

Athelas, Faith, and I did a bunch of wordsprints on WriteDeck. If you've never heard of it, you should definitely check it out. WriteDeck is basically racing to see who can get to a certain amount of words first with other writers, and it's very motivational.

2:00 // 1,400

Mwahaha, I have lemonade to help me operate.

And, also Twitter is being very distracting. But that's nothing new.

3:00 // 1,000

I HAVE TO LEAVE AT 3:30 TO GO TO WORK. THIRTY MINUTES TO WRITE 1k. I have to do this or else I'm forever doomed.
*writes like mad*
*comes back with a minute to spare*

I did it. 1k in an hour. Which isn't terribly impressive for me, but my wrists are dying, and my brain is mush. Now to go work for five hours for a "break." xD

4:00 // 0

*does the coffee thing*

5:00 // 0

*actually doesn't do much of the coffee thing because I am on drive thru today*

6:00 // 0

Drive thru is always very interesting because then you get the occasional customer who has a little boy with an iron man suit staring at you while you count their change.

(it made me start laughing and that only caused them to stare at me more but oh well. :P)

7:00 // 0

Last hour of work!

8:00 // 300

*drives home playing Twenty One Pilots (softly) and singing/rapping the lyrics (not-so-softly)*

OKAY. FINALLY HOME. I have roughly three hours to write 5,000 words. Is this possible in my brain-dead and sleep-deprived state?

Not sure.
But I'm going to try.

9:00 // 1,300

Aaand my computer decided to crash. I only lost three hundred words, but it seems like a whole lot when I'm trying to write 5k in three hours. :P

10:00 // 1,716

i'm so tired.
why did i think this was a good idea.
will i even make it?
*too lazy to even write with proper capitalization i am dyingggg*

11:00 // 1,684

I HAVE ONE HOUR AND TOO MANY WORDS TO WRITE. I'M IGNORING THE INTERNET. IGNORING EVERYTHING. TURNING ON SPOTIFY'S "DEEP FOCUS" PLAYLIST AND GOING INTO SUPER-WRITER MODE.

11:56 // and then this happened...
-
I'm still trying to figure out how worth it this actually was. I got a lot of words written... but I am still slightly dead from the insane day. Maybe one day I'll do it again... but not for a long, long time. xD

And just a reminder that this is how I write best! Not everyone thrives off of insane marathoning days. If you write slowly, that's okay. If you write fast, that's okay. It's important for writers to figure out what works best for them. :D

Huge shoutout to the wonderful Aimee and Anna for warring me throughout the day and ALSO completing 20k. We're all slightly mad. (also I believe that Anna will be writing a post like this today so make sure to check it out)

// katie grace

Do you thrive off of crazy writing days, or are you more of a take-it-slow writer?
(heh, "take-it-slow." all you twenty one pilots fans will get that. xD)
What's the most you've ever written in a day?

  1. HOW. How are you not dead by now???

The most I think I've ever written in a day is 6k, but I definitely aim for a 10k day, or even a whole week of writing 10k a day during Christmas break or summer or a long break like that :P

AND YOU. 20K IS LIKE A NOVELLA. OR LIKE 1/4 OR 1/5 OF A BOOK. THAT IS AMAZING πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Ooooh, but that's still good! AH. YOU KNOW WHAT WE SHOULD DO? WE SHOULD DO A 10k DAY TOGETHER. :D

I knowww. o.O I wish those words were good words... but at least I have them so I can edit. xD

  2. OH MY GOODNESS YOU ARE A SUPERHERO KATIE, I DON'T GET HOW YOU CAN DOOO IIITT. GIVE ME YOUR SECRETS. I mean, sure I can write 20k in two weeks but ONE DAY??? My life is a lie. xD

But honestly, you are an inspiration to me. (that I'm not the only insane one. but actually quite normal compared to 'them' xD) The most I've ever written in one day? That would be 6k. And I was shocked. But then again, 5k of that was just in the morning so...maybe if I had a whole day to write in (haha nope) I could manage maybe...8k? But no way anything like 20k. That's just *distant explosions*

Nah, don't worry, our family uses chickens with cut off heads as examples too. ;P

Good. We're not the only weird ones. :P

  3. Yaaaas, exactly how I felt after writing 10k for the first time. xD Your sentence, 'waht even are wurds'. I usually sorta like writing a lot...with my partners, I have two at the moment like we're all writing a book, but sometimes I hate writing. And I've written 10k before.

Seriously tho, you rock dude, I think the most I've ever gotten written in a day is almost 3,000 or whatevs, HOW DO YOU DO THAT THOUGH, how much do you get written on average writing days?

    ReplyDelete

    1. ACTUALLY DON'T KNOW. xD

But stillll that is good! On an average writing day... 2-4k. It depends on how much time I have. But I usually try for somewhere between that. :)

  10. I write slower than a turtle in a puddle of molasses, so the most that I can remember writing in one day was 2k during NaNoWriMo last year. I mean, It's possible that I've written more than that and just haven't noticed. But if I didn't notice, I can't brag about it, can I?

And also, you're insane and I am worried for your health. But also very proud of you. <3 <3

  11. OMG THAT's SO AMAZING HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO BE THIS AWESOME!??!?!??

I think the most I've ever written is 2000-ish words in an afternoon, which isn't that bad, but I'd like to be able to pull off what you did. Since I don't have a laptop, my inspiration is drawn away to my brothers watching TV -.- And they watch TV from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. so WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!!!!!!!!! huhum sorry I got carried away.

You know what? Maybe I'll try (once I come back from vacations though, it might be more productive and possible) to stay up late and/or wake up early to try it :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But... still. In an afternoon, that's awesome!
Gahh, and it would be sooo much harder if you didn't have a laptop. I'm able to carry my laptop wherever I want in the house so I can hide, so having my own computer is very important. :P

YOU SHOULD TOTALLY TRY IT. And like I said in a comment to someone else above, start smaller and build up. 5k, 10k, 15k, and then the dreaded 20k. :P

  13. *chokes* You wrote WHAT?!

20K in one day. HOW EVEN. That's like ... like ... like me writing my WHOLE NOVELLA IN ONE DAY THIS IS A PHYSICAL IMPOSSIBILITY. You must have used a time machine or something, right? RIGHT?! Come on, tell us ALL the secrets *grabby hands* (though I MIGHT have to come steal your time machine ...).

Crazy writing or slow ... eh, depends on what mood I'm in. Sometimes I'm the nice, friendly writer who just says 'whatever I write today will be good enough for me', and other times I turn into this insane writing monster who pounds away at the keyboard whilst yelling 'MUST FINISH STORY!!!'. The most I've written in a day is 7k, I think XD.

Ooh, 7k is a lot. o.O I do the same thing, though. When I'm not in a NaNo month, I just try to write whatever I can. Or I try to set goals. But, that's occasionally stressful. xD

  14. WHOA. I AM IMPRESSED. The most I've ever written in a day was 10k. And I thought I was doing SO WELL. *laughs hysterically*

Hmm... I'm not sure if I'm a take it slow-er, or a lightning fast streak. ;) I haven't timed myself; but the most words I did for this Camp, at least, was 4,500. :) Everyone says I'm a fast writer/typer, plus I don't type with all of my fingers (like you're supposed to) so yes... I am the fastest two-finger typer writer! xD
I agree! :) I think every writer is different; which is how Yahweh made us! :D So, while some of us crazy writers (we're all a bit crazy... right?) go really fast and some of us slow- if we're in God's hands and listen to what HE says to write... Honeyyy, we earn all the pizza. ;)

On an unrelated note, what are your top three favorite Twenty-One Pilots songs? I'm thinking of giving them a try (having heard a little bit of their music while in WSS, otherwise known as real-life Rivendell) and so I'm asking all my friends who are fans of them for recommendations.

ARGH. SO HARD. That's a simply evil question. x.x ...All of them? Seriously, you have to listen to all of their songs. xD But some of my favorites right NOW are Forest, March to the Sea, and Not Today. I think. Gah. xD

Tell me what you think of Twenty One Pilots! I must know. :D

      Delete
    2. Yes, but I do not have the capability to zombie-write. I'd just sit there and stare at my notebook and possibly laugh maniacally once or twice.

Thank you! I got some recommendations from others as well, so I've been checking those out. I've listened to Not Today (actually just listened to it again) and enjoyed it. March to the Sea and Forest are both on my to-listen-to lists.

In general, from what I've heard of their music, I enjoy some of it and then some of it is not my thing for one reason or another. But Heathens, Stressed Out, Fairly Local, and Lovely are all pretty awesome, IMO.

LITERALLY, GO FORTH AND BE SO. CRAZY. PROUD. OF YOURSELF. 20k in one day is a HUGE accomplishment... like, I can't even get my head around it. You're awesome. I hope you treated yourself to pizza and ice cream because you totally deserved it.

  36. WOW. That is an amazing achievement. I don't think I could even begin to write anywhere near that much in a day! Well done, you deserve a... um a humongous pizza? Haha :)

  37. I don't know how you aren't dead, but I'm impressed. I am definitely a take it slow(hahaha tΓΈp reference) kind of gal. Like, been working on the same project for five years slow. Hehe. I have no shame.

  38. Okay, so you've probably already hear this a million times, but HOW ON EARTH?! You ARE human, right? It's slowly registering into my brain. When I first read it, I thought at first you meant to put 2k and accidentally added a zero. Was I wrong :P

    CONGRATULATIONS!!

    1. That would have been an unfortunate typo. Or the other way around -- writing 2k in a day. (which is still super impressive, just not what I'm going for. xD)

  39. That's INSANE!!! I can't even write 500 words in a day!:) I'm also a really slow typer! I LOVE Twenty One Pilots!!! Whats your favorite song by them?

    1. It would be hard to get a lot of words in one day if you're a slower typer. That's completely understandable. :)

THAT'S SUCH A HARD THING TO CHOOSE. I don't know?? I love Semi-Automatic, March to the Sea, The Run and Go, Fall Away... ALL OF THEM. xD

      What about you?

    2. I really like Kitchen Sink and Heathens. But I'll have to agree with you, it's hard to choose just one! :)

  42. YOU MUST BE MAD. I loved reading this (and your devotion to pizza never fails to make me smile) but also HELLO ARE YOU INSANE WHO STARTS WRITING AT MIDNIGHT. MIDNIGHT IS FOR SLEEPING. SLEEPY SLEEPY SLEEP. The thought of having my laptop open at 2am makes me want to sob forever. But then, I am a handwriter. So.

Isn't it great that we can all work out our own speed and style?! XD

I'm glad you survived. Hope NaNo went well! <3
