End of the Year Goals for 2016

Saturday, September 17, 2016
Summer is officially over. *cue the crying*

I actually really like fall, but it's a very busy and stressful time which makes it hard for me to enjoy it quite as much.

Last year about this time (well, a month later, but oh well) I wrote about my end of the year goals for 2015. That ended up being one of my popular posts, actually, so I'M BACK TO DO IT AGAIN. (it's also really fun to write lists within lists.)

   a. No, my goal is not to read one hundred and twenty-five books in the next couple months. I just want to hit the total for the whole year. :P
   b. I've read 108 books so far. I should definitely be able to make it to 125, but my not so secret goal is to read more than that. WE'LL SEE.
   c. Some books I'm looking forward to reading:
          - Scythe by Neal Shusterman
          - Gemina by Amie Kaufman + Jay Kristoff
          - A Time to Rise -- a reread, because this book is beautiful and every one of you must read it.

   a. this isn't as much of a goal, and more of a limitation.
   b. (because I have a habit of wanting to read allll the beta novels at once. not a great idea)

   a. I have never plotted out a full book before.
   b. This might be a little insane.
   c. Okay, it's a lot insane
 d. I AM DETERMINED TO TRY SOMETHING NEW AND HOPEFULLY AVOID REWRITING FOR ONCE.

   a. Notice how I say "a novel" instead of a proper title?
   b. I said that because I ACTUALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M WRITING YET.
   c. But don't worry, I'm not freaking out.
   d. hahaha actually totally freaking out because NANO'S IN 43 DAYS AND I'M NOT PREPARED.
   e. this year I'm going to spend a week-long retreat with another epic NaNoer and MORE ON THAT LATER)

   a. I am determined to finish this by the end of the month OR ELSE.
   b. (this draft has been the evilest draft and I swear it wants to kill me. So. many. plot. issues.

   a. I know blogging isn't supposed to be about numbers but yet it's STILL EXCITING to know that people are reading what I write. xD
   b. (And I think we all pay a little bit of attention to it)
   c. Besides, two hundred is a really exciting milestone to hit.

   a. Bullet journaling has exploded over the internet all of a sudden, and I decided to join the craze and give it a try myself.
   b. So far it's been really awesome? It's helped me manage my time and be more productive
   c. Pictures will come later once I remember to take some and get better at the arting skills.

    1. RIGHT??! I'M TOTALLY FREAKING OUT. I need a story. ASAP. I have ideas, but what if none of them are good? What if I can't plot them out enough? What if I just hit a block and I CAN'T WRITE ANYTHING FOR NANO. *tries not to freak out but totally fails*

WE CAN DO THE THING! :P

    2. I KNOWWW. I have ideas (a sequel for an already written novel, a fairy tale retelling, a random Steam Punk thing) but I don't really know anything about any of them. *attempts not to panic* And I don't know which to do because I'm equally clueless with them all.

*fistbumps and pizza* Yes. We shall do this.

      Delete
    3. Eeek, that's always hard. Which fairy tale retelling are you thinking about? *loves allll the retellings*

    4. It's a Beauty and the Beast retelling, only with Beauty as the villain. So yeah, it's an idea I do want to do something with sometime. :)

  5. YOU READ A LOT. Just wow.

Love your goals! <3 You're seriously talented and great at what you do; I'm sure you will do awesome at completing those goals. :)

My end of the year goals are...

... start a journal and continue writing in it consistently. I kind of like the idea of a bullet journal, but that's just not really ME, you know? I love in-depth talks with myself and poems and random observations, and while a bullet journal would be great, I think regular journaling is for me. *nods* (and I got THE PRETTIEST JOURNAL EVER for this and wow I'm just not ready to ruin it. xD)

... completely plot out my novel. I'm really hoping this will happen. I live by outlines. xD

... Do NaNoWriMo and TRY to reach the goal, even though I'm going to be really busy. Because if I reach 50,000, then I will have the ultimate motivation to keep going... BECAUSE 50,000 WORDS DUDE. o.o

... survive school. I'm getting increasingly busier, with a lot more speeches and presentations and essays on my hands. *cries*

... find a new piano teacher. I'm a little rusty since I didn't get to play over the move, and now I need a new teacher. :/ Hopefully we can find a good one, because I do NOT want to stop piano. o.o

... somehow keep my sanity through the holidays - with so many youth chorale concerts and plans of our own, I don't know how it's all going to be juggled.

Anyway, we will brave these goals and hopefully conquer them. Here's to a good end of the year!

    1. Also, I was wondering where you got that fabulous box of pens pictured in the image containing your bullet journal? Because they're just SO STINKIN' PRETTY, and I used to have a small package just like them, but with four sisters in the house + several moves, they got... y'know, lost. xD (but I loved them! they were the best ever. <3)

    2. YEAH I'M NOT SURE HOW READING EXPLODED THIS YEAR. xD Though it's slowing down. Slowly.

OOOH yay for journaling! I want pictures. *nodnod* Because prettiest journals are the best. xD And that makes sense. I still do a couple journal entries every month just for more in depth things + experiences. :D

Mwahaha, we'll both try to completely outline our novels by the end of the year. Will the outlined novel be for NaNo?

Will it be your first time doing NaNo? o.O

Ughhh school. Business. LIFE. xD You can do the thing! Definitely keep me updated on the goals. :D

My mom got the pens for me, and I think she got them on Amazon. (we get so many things from Amazon. It's lovely. xD)
      Awhh. *mourns the lost pens*

    3. Pretty journals ARE the best. *sighs* Mine's blue with a beautiful font that says, "write your story" and I just love it. <3

Yes, I'm going to use that outline for NaNo. :D I'M NOT FREAKING OUT. (<< lie)

YES YES. I'm very scared. And very excited. xD I HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO REACH THAT GOAL. Eeeek. O.o

Ohh, okay. I shall search for them *nodnod* :) *also mourns the lost pens*

  6. Girl, you have huge aspirations for the end of the year! (but you are so much more capable of accomplishing them than myself, and of course it doesn't have anything to deal with you being superhuman...;))
Huh. I haven't really thought that much about end of the year goals. I should ruminate about these...ooh, and post about them...
All right, I need some input. I've never done NaNoWriMo before, and the closest thing to it that I have done is 100-4-100. Do you think I should do it this year?! Because this is my first year of high-school, and I don't know if juggling high-school AND NaNo at the same time would be wise. =\ GAH I just don't knowww!
Ooh, and yes, what is bullet journaling?

    1. Oooh. NaNoWriMo. Okay. So. Hm. Well. xD

NaNoWriMo is the most motivational thing in the world, and it's so much fun doing it, because there 2082775 other writers doing it with you. (I actually have no idea how many people there are, but that sounded like a good number.)

100-4-100 is super impressive, so obviously you have the motivation/dedication for completing such a goal. But it IS hard. Very hard. And it's ultimately up to you whether you decide to do it or not. (I want to just say "go for it!" But I don't want to cause you extra stress. XD)

You can always try it out for the first week, and if it becomes too much,, then you can stop. No harm in that. :D Or try out the young writer's program where you can choose your own word count so it's not quite as daunting.

As I've said in some of the above comments, it's basically a glorified to-do list squished in a journal where you can do whatever you want. XD

Let me know what you decide about NaNo!

  7. I should probably start bullet journalling to keep myself all organised and stuff.

  16. Oh gosh... I can't believe we're already getting to the end of the year. o.o

Well, I have two ideas I'm trying to decide between for NaNo... I had already decided on one and then I got another idea that I got super excited about. xD So whichever one I do, I need to plan that out so I don't get stuck like I did last year...
And I say this way too often, but I also want to get some more work done on my other unfinished book(s).

My goal for this year was to read 100 books, and I'm at 60-something right now, so I probably won't quite get there, but I think I'll get pretty close. :D Plus, 100 was kind of my secondary goal-- 50 was my first one. So technically I've already passed up my goal. xD

    1. Right?!?

Gah, that's always a problem. I think I know what I'll be writing, but then there are two other ideas poking my mind so I have no idea what I'll be doing for NaNo. xD

Wow, you've totally crushed your original goal. XD What have been some of your favorite books you've read?

    2. Well, now that I'm looking back, I realize this has actually been a really good book year! I read a lot of Margaret Peterson Haddix books-- the rest of the Shadow Children series and the whole The Missing series, and all those ranked pretty high. Also The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest, Uncommon Criminals, Scarlet, and the first two Michael Vey books... yeah, like I said, there have been a lot of good books this year. xD

    3. Awhh, I remember the Shadow Children series! Memories. <3

So good luck to you!! (And I love your dragon book's title because dragons.)

My goal of next year is to start bullet journalling. And stick to it hopefully.😂

  23. KATIE GRACE YOU'RE CRAZY. Ahh, I wish I could read 125 books in a year. I made a goal for 100 and have failed (epically.) (also is "epically" a word because I THOUGHT IT WAS but this comment box is underlining it in red, grr.)

I've been observing the bullet journaling craze from afar! My close friend just started hers, so I'm going to see how it goes... I've been wary about trying to start it because I'm such a perfectionist that I'd be afraid to mess it up, haha!

Also I now have to get A Time to Rise.

And GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NOVEL. I'm positive you'll figure something out. and write the heck out of it. (Obviously. You're Katie!)

  26. Ahhh, awesome goals, Katie! I have like...no idea what my goals are yet. XD I guess try to come up with a consistent blogging schedule (I seem to just post whenever right now :P), SURVIVE SPEECH CLASS, finish my WIP (is that a terrifying goal? no, not at all XP), and read a total of 50 books (which looks lame in comparison to your 125 book goal--WHAT EVEN KATIE).

So...I guess I have goals NOW. XD

41 DAYS TILL NANO NOW. That is, if I mathed correctly. XD I'm not sure if I'm doing it yet? Maaaaybe I'll try it? I don't know if I want to lose what iota of sanity I have left, though. 30. *Not so subtly starts writing down end of the year goals* Okay now I'm totally prepared for this sophomore college year *nod nod*

You are a champ, my fren! 108 books already? And you still manage to write 20 000 words in a day? WHAT IS LIFE?!!!?!

NaNoWriMo freaks me out honestly because I'm scared not be able to write as much as I would aim to, because school :/ Any tips anyone? Also, I have like literally like... *counting* 4 different ideas? WHAT DO I DO?

Anyway, write VOID! You know, your new story that seems AWESOME.

I want to get into journaling more too, but a "diaries" sort of journaling and a spiritual journal too. But bullet journaling seems awesome too :)

    1. YOU CAN CONQUER COLLEGE. *pumps fist*

Well, thankfully the 20k day only took up 1/365 days of the year. XD

Ughh, that's hard. o.o I mean, first things first, it's obviously best to narrow it down to one. Plotting would probably be best, so then you're not freaking out about WHAT to write on top of things. And you can always try for it, and it's okay if you don't hit 50,000 words! Dude, I have no idea how that would be possible with school. o.o

I REALLY WANT TO. But I'm thinking that may not be best for this November? It just doesn't feel *right.* *shrug* So I might do WHERE SHADOWS LIE instead. :P Decisions are so hard. xD

Oooh, you should totally do the thing. *nodnod*

  31. what what 43 DAYS?! And you posted this three days ago so 40 DAYS?! WHAT IS THIS.
This is a fabulous post and I think I may have to steal this idea. Fall is always just a busy time but lovely and there's so much I want/have to do. :D
Main goals? Get school done everyday. Finish this draft of Sparrow Singing for betas. Re-write/adjust/just familiarize myself with the second book, Truth Remaining by Octoberish. (ha ha. that'll happen)
Then I need to plot out the third book for NaNo. That has to happen.
    Then NaNo. *evil grin*

    1. And YOU posted this three days ago, so 37 DAYS. XD

DO THE THING! I would love to see your end of the year goals! It's so interesting to me for some reason. xD

Yuuus, do the thing. Three books? o.O That's insane. I can't imagine doing a trilogy. That's just a lot of story to write and plot and piece together. :P Will it stay at a trilogy, or are there more coming?

      NANOWRIMO. YAS. *pumps fist*

    2. It IS so much plotting! It's a bit easier since they're all form different POV's, but... I love big books, I suppose. XD
Weeell I hope it stays as a Trilogy. There's only so far one can go with a Dystopian, ya know?
I'm still plotting the ending of the third book right now and trying to make sure the story seems "finished" enough, so as not to make readers angry. XD

  34. I'm not prepared for NaNoWriMo either. My plan was to do that next month, but since my test of going at that speed for a week failed half way through and I might be getting a new job, it's likely I'll just bail out,

I'm afraid to tell you that I mostly plotted about 2 thirds of my first novel and though I knew where the end was going and I'm having to rewrite it. Especially the beginning. But maybe that was because it was my first. So still try it.

I tagged you for the Books as Rooms challenge. http://annasbrie.blogspot.com/2016/09/books-as-rooms-challenge.html
